  1. I have a box full of samples, mainly from from Birchbox & Ipsy, that I would love to just get rid of. I've done 4-5 individual swaps, but I find that very time-consuming. So...anyone want to swap out ALL your items for ALL mine? As long as we have around the same number of items of generally the same quality (roughly in the same sizes and a decent mix of products), I would love to do it! Here's my full stash: MAKEUP Julep Sweep Eyeshadow Palette, Neutrals (full size) - has been swatched 2x Cynthia Rowley eyeliner in silver (half-size) Model Cosmetics Shimmer Bronzing Powder (in a small compact like eyeshadow) Prestige Primed & Ready eyelid primer (0.5 oz - full size) NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair (rose pink) (1/2 size tube) Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Pixi Pink (bubblegum pink) (full size) NAILS NCLA Accent Nail Wraps, various black and white designs (12 count) Color Club nail lacquer in Aquamarine Azulino (frosted baby blue) (mini bottle) FACE & BODY Dr. Brandt Pores-No-More, .25 fl oz tube Dr. Jart Dis-A-Pore Beauty Balm, SPF 30, 0.2 fl oz mini-tube Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (1.5 mL packet) Hang Ten Classic Sport natural sunscreen, SPF50 (1 oz tube) Purlisse Pur-Moist hydra-balance moisturizer, normal to dry skin (1/2 oz tube) Purlisse Pur-Protect essential daily moisturizer, spf 30, normal to dry skin (1/2 oz tube) Supergoop CC Cream Daily Correct, SPF 35, light to medium (3 mL tube) Supergoop Anti-Aging Eye Cream w/SPF 37 (2 mL mini-tube) HAIR Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper (silicone treatment) (1 oz packet)

    Birchbox Soho

I went today at lunch. My review: THE GOOD: 1. The selection of products is curated, in that it's limited to the "Birchbox World" of brands and items. In some ways, I appreciate that over the mass quantities at Sephora - it's less overwhelming. And for Birchbox subscribers like me, I like the fact that I can walk in and try everything that Birchbox touts on its site and hands out via samples. (For example, I'll no longer be begging to trade for that Balm How About Them Apples blush sampler, now that I was able to actually see the colors - yuck! But on the other hand, that Stila lip pencil is awesome.) 2. Well-lit; hallelujah! And they have everything you need to sample - tissues, makeup remover, big mirrors. 3. No sales people following you around and bugging you - the store was nearly empty when I was there, but after a friendly hello from the woman running the cash register, I was left alone. 4. I did not visit the salon downstairs, but I like the idea of that being an option. THE BAD: 1. The Build-A-Box was very disappointing. You get 5 samples, *but* you have to choose 1 item in each of 5 categories (which I think were Makeup, Hair, Face, Fragrance, Nails). I thought I was going to be able to cancel my subscription and avoid getting all those face creams I don't want by tripling up on makeup instead; but no. Moreover, in each category, they do *not* have a full range of this month's items to choose from; for example, you could choose the ColorClub nail polish for your Nail category option, but you had no choice of color - the only option is a god-awful shocking pink. They need to fix this, stat. THE VERDICT: Without a viable Build-A-Box option, it's hard to justify coming here often. I'll probably come every few months to see new stuff, but I was hoping that this would be some place I could come every 2-3 weeks and get new samples. I would absolutely pay $15 (or even $20-25) for a decent box that I can truly build myself.

I haven't yet, but I plan to go in the next week. I work nearby. If it's as great as it looks, I'm going to start making my own sample boxes there and forgetting the whole "surprise me" subscription thing! Will report back.

  6. I love what eyeshadow primer does, but I seem to be allergic to whatever magical ingredient they use to make them. I've tried three different brands (including drugstore brands and primo brands), and each one leaves my eyes itchy and red. So, what can I do to make my eyeshadow colors stay true and last all day, if I can't use primer? Alternative products, tips, tricks? Thanks ladies and gents!
  7. I have a few months' worth of Birchbox and Ipsy leftovers, let's do a trade!! 8. Take photos of yourself rather than just relying on your mirror. I do that when testing out pretty much any new product. There's something about a photo that's a more objective view of yourself.
  9. Urban Decay's names always make my eyes roll. I just got "Perversion," their taupe eyeliner. C'mon, it's eyeliner, it really can't be perverted. Unless you're doing something with your eyeliner that I would not recommend.
  10. You know the one - it's the makeup product that every brand makes, from Wet 'n' Wild to Dior, and all the beauty mags talk about, and everyone has an opinion on - but you're like NO WAY. Not for me! For me, that's foundation primer. I want my foundation to be sinking into my skin, thank you very much, not floating around on a sea of silicone. What's yours?
  11. Not a fan of the mascara. Makes my lashes long only by gluing them together and stringing them out. I need separation, man!
  12. I was on the wait list for 6 weeks, and then I emailed their Help desk. My email basically said, "I don't understand your business model. Do you want my money or do you NOT want my money." Got a response within two hours that my subscription was active. Woot! witches win!
  13. Dior Skin BB cream is uh-may-zing. Creamy yet still medium-coverage. I bulk it up with Kat Von D's Lock-It Tattoo foundation, which I had always found to give great coverage but be too drying. I also test-drove Urban Decay's BB cream, which was watery and orangey, ick. Also Smashbox's CC cream, which was meh. Dior all the way.
  14. I rarely react to skin care products or makeup. But there are a few exceptions below, and I'm dying to figure out what it is that's making me react! I think it has something to do with mattifying ingredients, but what is that, exactly? Anyone have a guess? Here's what gets me: URBAN DECAY EYESHADOW PRIMER - made my eyes red, swollen, and itchy, especially the matte version. YSL TOUCHE ECLAT - gave me dry, itchy, "alligator" skin where applied DR BRANDT SUNSCREEN - this was many years ago, so I don't have the product to compare ingredients. It was supposed to be a very matte finish, though. There are lots of overlapping ingredients here, so it's hard to pinpoint the problem. Anyone? As a bonus, if anyone else had a bad reaction to these products but found an alternative that worked, would love to hear about it!
  15. April 2010: Hi fellow newbie! I've done one trade and would love to do another. Will PM you.
