"Hot" Items?

Hi! I'm new to the thread but (unfortunately for my bank account) NOT new to LBB! One thing I don't get is: what makes items qualify as 'hot'? I had a bunch of duds that weren't trading well so I traded down for items the newsfeed said were hot (like the OMG ring) and no one wanted it! No good incoming offers and I couldn't trade it up!

Also, if you look in the gallery with the filter of 'hot items' it supposedly ranks everything- has anyone found this helpful in their trade strategy?
