I was looking for some advice. My daughter is 9 years old and she is difficult to buy for because the only thing she really enjoys doing is playing with makeup (and some other artsy type stuff like clay, drawing, but she has tons of those supplies). I have bought her tons of makeup and what she has continually asks for is an airbrush. She likes to do face painting and special effects type makeup, she watches YouTube 'how to' videos and tries to copy them.

Anyways for Christmas I would like to buy her an airbrush, I don't want to get anything generic or something that isn't going to last (like a Crayola set). So I wanted advice on what would be a good airbrush starter set for her? I obviously don't want to spend 1000s of dollars, but I want something decent so that if she really sticks with this she can use it for awhile and teach herself a skill that can be valuable one day.

Any other suggestions about what I can do to help her with this hobby would be very appreciated. I don't know hardly anything about makeup so any advice would be helpful!

Thanks!!

An airbrush system is a huge investment for Pros and for well... for anybody. The cleaning and maintenance is a big factor in owning one. There are a few, very small and delicate pieces in the gun alone that needs to be taken into account. Dinair is a low-maintenance system, but again the key word there is maintenance. I think that a 9 yr old is a bit young for an airbrush system. But you never know...

Of course I would help her with the maintenance of the system and I understand that she is young and they are expensive, but that is why I asked for advice/recommendations. I want a more affordable one, but the way I see it is how is it any different from buying an xbox for my son? Those are expensive too (although they don't require the maintenance) and this may give her a skill and it is her passion.

Anyways I was looking at maybe one of these kits, but I don't even know what I am looking for so I don't know. http://www.europeanbodyart.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/111_114_138/products_id/2695/

Also:

Can you use airbrushes for multi purpose use? I mean can she use it for makeup and then (after switching the type of paint used) for decorating furniture (just an example)? Or do you need separate airbrushes for each thing.

Thanks again for any suggestions.

Cosmetic airbrushes, unless you get a very high-end pro one, have a low PSI and are not optimal for craft purposes. The two you posted links to I haven't used, I own one from Luminess and Dinair, and I actually like my Dinair one better because it's more compact.

Yes, you technically can use the compressor for makeup and for other purposes however you're going to need different guns and hoses because you can't use the same gun for paint that you would use for cosmetics due to the difference of paint quality and for safety reasons. And while there are many non-cosmetic compressors on the market those tend to have higher PSI which are potentially damaging to the skin in the hands of someone not trained to use a compressor.

What's expensive to replace are the airbrush guns especially if you want to use one for makeup and one for other types of painting. The guns cost as little as $50 and go up to a few hundred dollars. Then there are the hoses which are not expensive (most are between $5 to $10 depending on the compressor) but some do go up to a $100 or more. IF you want to invest in a compressor for cosmetics that can be used for hobbies and crafts then invest in a Grex compressor. The Aeris I from Grex can be used for cosmetics, cake decoration and hobbies/craft. You will then need to buy a airbrush gun for cosmetics (see the link to Naimies for various airbrushes for cosmetics) and one for hobbies/crafts (see Hobby Lobby link). Remember you'll also need at least two different hoses and the reason I would say get two hoses is because there is always the possibility for cross-contamination.

Oh and a few more things I'm forgetting. The needles are delicate and can bend. Those can cost between $10 to $30 each. You'll need a cleaning kit (one specifically for cosmetics) and one for whatever paint you use for hobby/crafts. Those can get pricey as well depending on the kit. A kit is essential because you have to clean the gun after each and every use otherwise it'll get clogged and becomes more of a pain to clean (been there, done that). Of course there is the makeup - there are so many airbrush foundations on the market and I'm not even factoring in all the other airbrush makeup, primers, blushes and shadows - and yes, there are DIY to make your own airbrush primer and foundations however you have to be experienced and a nine-year-old wouldn't be..
