June 2014 No/Low-Buy Thread - Hugs, commiseration and confessional

Recommended Posts

I'm *very* tempted to go through my bathroom, toss out all of the shower gel/shampoo/scrubs/conditioner/etc.and just start over.  Purge it all, place one Lush order (one shower gel, one shampoo, one conditioner.  I would just go to the Lush store, but the shampoo I want is online-only), and get a fresh start.  Last night, I found a bottle of shampoo that must be at least four years old because it's from Whole Foods, and they changed the label on this stuff at least that long ago.  I actually think I bought it when I was still living in the Seattle area, which would make it *six* years old.  And it was almost full.  I feel like this stuff must breed when I'm not looking because it just *never ends*.

It just feels really *defeating* and like using everything up is impossible when you think you're *so close* to the end and then, nope, there's another bottle.  At this point, it's not even about no-/low-buy.  It's about just wanting what I have to be *gone*.

Joining in for June! I spent waaaay too much the first five months of the year, and I know I'll go ham when the holidays foll around, so summer is my chance to make it up! For June, I am looking at:

- Ipsy (paid)

- Glossybox (used Glossydots)

- $50 BBW Semi-Annual Sale

- $50 "emergency" fund.

GOALS

- Finish up two almost finished foundations

- Finish up one mascara

- Finish up one face powder

- Finish up at least one BBW lotion and shower gel

NOT ALLOWED

- No items I am trying to use up (powder, mascara, foundation)

- No new MAC (Back 2 MAC is only exception)

- No using promos to justify unnecessary purchases.

It's going to be really hard. I'm already chomping at the bit to try the new UD mascara.

ETA: Mascara doesn't come out until July. Hooray! I'm saved! :laughno:

ETA2: Emergency already happened! When I was removing my makeup, I missed the cotton pad and dumped makeup remover all over the floor. I went from 1/2 bottle to less than 1/4th! I'm off to a great start!

I did a project pan on my Nude'Tude palette and it was such a great feeling to accomplish that. I think I am going to do that for this month. I think it will be good incentive. Last month I only spent $5 out of pocket, but I still bought makeup and I think I need to focus on my latest mantra. Quality over Quantity! Everything in my life fits that bill except my makeup collection. I need to focus on using what I have. I am going to pick one product from each category to try and hit pan on this month.

I need to make a full on Goal List instead of posts adding things I should do (Sorry for all the scattered posts, my mind does not like to organize everything in a simple way lol)

So I am on basically on a no-buy!

My rules:

1: I can keep my ipsy and birchbox. (I LOVE my birchbox points, but I don't love box itself so I may consider cancelling that)

2: No makeup* (including chapstick since I purchased some last month)

3: No Essie nail polish**

*I am allowed to break my no-buy on June 20th when I am on a trip and will be near a Sephora. I am allowing myself the Urban Decay Electric Palette, a brow pencil, and one or two other things.

**I am allowed to buy Essie polish if it is from TJ Maxx at a lower price and in a color I do not have.

I am going to focus hitting pan on the following things this month:

1: Mushroom in my Urban Decay Mariposa palette (Will probably hit this week)

2:The brunette powder and wax in my Too Faced Brow Envy set. I have been using this everyday since August and it is finally close to a pan

3: A Deluxe sample of Pixi bronzer in Summertime. I have been using this everyday since November. I love it, but for summer I want to use my Tarte Park Ave Bronzer, but I want to hit pan on my Pixi first

I am going to try and use up the following products:

1: Revlon eye primer: mehh about this but don't want to waste it and it's so close to being finished

2: A sample of noya lipgloss in Summertime Peach

3: Coola BB Cream: I have been using this sample for 3 weeks now and I swear it's never ending for such a tiny bottle

4: Sumita Black eyeliner from Birchbox. I just want this and my Cynthia Rowley ones to be used up because Smashbox Onyx is my HG now and I just want to get a full size of it

5: Benefit Lollitint sample

6: Covergirl loose powder: I have been trying to use this up for months! A little goes a long way for me and holy poo I just want it used up!

7: MuFE lipstick sample in Natural (From the Sephora Birthday gift)

I am going to try and put a dent in:

1: My LAQA & Co. Lip lube :D LOVE THIS STUFF!

2: MAC lipstick in Pink Nouveau

3: Dior lip Maximizer

4: Lorac Baked Matte Satin Blush in Velvet Rope

5: Any other colors from the Urban Decay Mariposa palette and TheBalm Nude'Tude palette (I'll eventually get bored with these palettes and switch though. I need change often in my life or I'll get bored)

6: Lorac Pro mascara (HG!)

So....I'm thinking about selling some of my un-loved makeup. Some of it has been used (with very minimal use!) - whats your guys advice on selling it???  Ebay, or here in the Buy, Sell, Trade threads, or maybe on my instagram or a blog sale??

That's rough.  All the pretties you collected stop being fun once they become a task rather than fun.  Somebody mentioned somewhere that they look up old reviews for products they own when they are thinking of buying a dupe.  This makes the product they own seem exciting and covet-able again rather than just some old thing they own.   Maybe you could do this with some of your shampoos/conditioners/etc.?  Then you will remember why you were excited about the product and bought it in the first place.  Or go through and try to date them, set a cut off point, and throw away anything that is beyond that to avoid finding frightfully old ones?

Nope.  These were never exciting or pretty.  They were cheap.  They were things I bought basically out of desperation (because you *have* to bathe even when you're so broke you're more or less living on popcorn because it's cheap) when I couldn't get so much as an acknowledgement of a resume submission, so we're talking about Suave and B&BW stuff bought on sale/clearance and Whole Foods store brand shampoo purchased because I had a gift card.  If anything, they remind me of a very, *very* bad time of my life.  They're kind of like an itchy sweater a nasty ex gave you that you haven't gotten around to tossing yet because it's kind of warm when you get *really* desperate and every other comfycozy sweater or sweatshirt you actually like is dirty.

You can't sell used makeup on eBay. I don't think MUT's BST pages are that effective. I've had really good luck with Instagram using #themakeupexchange @themakeupexchange and other hashtags. There's also a make up selling section of Reddit but I'm not on there so I can't speak to that.

Maybe a nice bin for them then?  You know they are still there in an absolute emergency but for the time being they can be considered gone?  I find that for me throwing stuff out (even if I know I don't need it and it's hindering me to keep it around) is the absolute worst.

You guys, I am killing it at this using up products thing!  I am keeping track of my empties for the month for the first time and I can't wait to post a big giant list at the end of the month.  Plus it's been fun to use neglected products/samples.  I really should have joined this forum sooner because so far it's going great and I am having a blast without spending a penny!

Awesome! I find that keeping track of my empties helps with the no buy because it's a constant reminder that I have so much stuff!

Thanks for the insight! I'll probably try selling it on IG then. It's probably my best bet.

I actually did end up getting some stuff from the collection that I was going to allow myself to purchase from, but it's nothing that I was originally planning on getting. It's all stuff that's either missing from my collection (like bronzer) or it has colors that I know for sure that I will actually, most definitely wear. None of it is as wild and bright as the lovely lavenders, oranges, and bright pinks that I wanted, but I guess it's a step in the right direction to only actually get things that I know I will for sure wear?

Anyway, now that I've done that, I'm done for the month! Unless I run out of something, that is, but given the size of my collection, I doubt that's likely.

I have exactly like...10% left of a tube of lip gloss on my project pan items, and it's TAKING FOR FREAKING EVER! it's my mac looks like sin cremesheen, and i wrote it down as 50% but then saw through the light that it literally has like...a quarter inch left in the tube, and the sides are just stained. i've been using it and reapplying religiously, since i have noticed that this lip gloss and the revlon lip butters only last like...two hours on my lips, at best. they're both almost done and I'm excited to replace them! (with...another lip butter, and another lip gloss). once they're done, I'll switch to lipsticks, which take longer.

The makeupexchange subreddit is AWESOME. I have both sold and bought from there and I love it.

Neiman Marcus is having a beauty event and Nars has a lippy gwp with any purchase. My guess is a pencil sharpener for $6. I won't post it here, but I posted in the enablers thread with additional discounts and codes.

I've done really good on my no buy (yeah I know it's only been 4days)

I did have gift card to spend and had to pay for tax and $7 extra to complete the transaction. Also made a $1.50 purchase for my HG mascara, but this will be passed on to my Summer Swap person, unless she doesn't want mascara...not likely :P

I'm going to Vegas this weekend and my husband wants to go to Lush! What the Whaaaat! I've never used their products, but a person at his work told him HE'D love it...so I may have to break the no buy for that.

Going to edit my no buy since I forgot that we are going on vacation either to New York City or Chicago. I reserve the right to buy something fun. :D

Yeah, I'm skipping out on the NM Nars stuff. I have a lot of lip products as is.

Still doing good on my no-buy! then again its only day 4 of the week xD! but hey, that's 4 more days than I would have ever resisted back in september of last year. I am actually really enjoying using the items I have, it's like something has slowly but surely switched in my brain, so fingers crossed that things continue to go so well for me. Hubby and I did the math and, if we seriously set our minds to it, we could have all of our debt eliminated in 3 years except for our mortgage, which is a 30 year mortgage lol but we'd be able to then start making bigger payments on that. I have realized that I have enough makeup to really last me 3 years without even hurting lol.... I'd have to replace things like foundation, setting powder, shampoo/conditioner, etc, and maybe even body lotion, but for actual color stuff like eyeshadow and blush? yeah, I'm set for life. So we're going to take a crack at getting rid of the debt.

Hope everyone's doing well and hanging in there!

I guess I should not have gone into Ulta to wander around before an appointment. I may have bought a NYX Macaroon Lippie as a result. But, in my defense, they were all so new and shiny and untouched, which is extremely rare at my Ulta, so this really may have been my only chance to pick one up in person. I did resist a bunch of other stuff, though, and added them to my mental list of replacement purchases for the future.

Doing well so far. Currently working on my list of Shiro CotMs that I want to buy near the end of this month (the Shiro CotM clear out is on my allowed list and the colors are guaranteed until June 30). Also pondering a Rainbow Honey order near the middle to end of the month (because of their limited edition nail polish for June). Hopefully these will be my only makeup-related orders for June.

I have two indie orders that I ordered in May coming in this month, too, so hopefully those will keep me occupied and prevent me from buying more things.

Okay so first the good...I had subscribed to rainbow honey sub box, but before I even got my June box I cancelled. No need to spend money in that! If I fall in love with a mystery box I will just get it, no need for a sub.

Here is the bad part.

My sephora cart is currently filled with a benefit balm and 2 discounted sephora eyeshadows because I wanted to hit $25 mark so I could get the 100 point aqua liner they are offering and the free fresh rose balm. I am drooling over those freebies so bad!! But I am supposed to be strict no buy this month and my total would be $37 after ship...which clearly is not "no buy" :(

Somebody talk me down from this craziness. Lol

@@SaraP Make sure you go to the LUSH at Mandalay Place, It's the biggest of the two!

I've already broken my spending limit for June. When I found out Neiman Marcus had the beauty GWP I ended up asking my hubby for the the extra $50 to get me to the minimum.

... although, in my defense I DO also have a coupon so I don't think it will be the whole $50... that leaves a little bit of an emergency fund, right? Right?

I'm going on a no buy for makeup this month. I'm moving across the country next week after graduating from college. I don't have any furniture, so I'm going to be spending a lot of money on that. Right now, I'm very lacking in makeup organization, so I'm going to allow myself to get an Alex 9 from Ikea to store my makeup, and whatever other containers I need.

Other than that, I'm going to try not to buy any makeup, not even using gift cards or my PayPal balance. I really just don't need anything right now.

    • You might be in shape otherwise but still have a lump of fat jutting out from under your chin. And we agree, that totally spoils all the photos. But why don't you use makeup to get rid of double chin till such time you lose enough weight to get a chiseled jaw line? So even if you haven't managed to shed all that extra flab yet, but have a party that you just can't miss, don't get upset about the double chin. You can still use makeup cleverly to hide it and look fabulous in all your photos. Here are some makeup hacks that will come in handy:
    • The trick to take care of dry skin is to feed it with moisture. But, there's a drawback, we cannot overfeed it as it may lead to breakouts, acne, and pimples. Therefore, it is important to use the right product that helps to hydrate the skin without much harm.  So how do we combat dry skin?  Here are our favourite and effective product that helps to fight the dry flaky skin.  Cosrx - Hyaluronic Hydra Power Essence Hyaluronic Acid is the king of moisturization and this essence by Cosrx is full of it. It draws water into the skin and immediately moisturizes the dry & depleted skin.  Results: Skin is softer and moisturized, leaving bumpy and dry skin silky smooth. It's excellent for dry to normal skin types.  Some By Mi-H7 Hydromax Moisture Cream The name uses the word hydro max moisture to convey that nothing hydrates better than this! It soothes skin irritation, reduces skin redness and wrinkles. It also has a whitening effect and smoothes rough patches of skin. The 7 types of hyaluronic acid fill in from the deepest layer of the skin and create a barrier so that it can maintain the optimum moisture for a prolonged time. Make sure to use it after cleansing the skin.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Face Masks are excellent for providing ample moisture and long term hydration to the skin.  Here are our recommendations: Eunyul- Natural Moisture Mask Pack Lined with green tea extract, the facemask works to provide ample moisture to the skin while the collagen helps to reboot the skin in a short time.  Missha-Airy Fit Sheet Mask (Cucumber) This eco-friendly rice cake sheet mask is 2 times thinner than a normal sheet mask. Cucumber helps to effectively help combat dryness while the thin sheet mask feels airy and lightweight.
    • People tend to collect an amazing quantity of items over the years. Reasons for keeping items include an emotional attachment, an intention to reuse or fix the items in the future, or a wish to pass them on to others. However, for many items, if you haven't used them in over a year, you probably don't need them. Getting some help from https://www.emop.co.uk/clapham-cleaner/ to get rid of all your rubbish isn't a bad move. Don’t want to do it yourself? These people have you covered. Leave all the heavy lifting work to them. With a professional firm like eMop, you don’t need to worry about the pick-up or disposal of those old items that you don't need any more.
    • In my opinion, Tinder is more like an application for finding a partner for one night. This is completely frivolous for me. If I look for a girl for myself, then I will start browsing serious sites. You can see an approximate review in this source. When a girl talks about marriage, this gives a better chance of a long and serious relationship.
    • Greetings! A variety of t-shirts are in fashion nowadays and I am going to share the most trendy ones: Plain White Tees - If you are thinking that plain white tees are getting out of fashion then you are wrong. Either you wear tuck tees with jeans or full sleeve plain white tees with jackets. They always look cool. Graphic T-Shirts - Yes, the craze of graphic tees is increasing not only in public but also among the celebs. Even the big brands like Nike and Gucci are also offering logo tees. You can also see some unique women graphic tees here. Colorful Dye T-Shirts - On the other hand, girls are also crazy to wear Dye t-shirts. You can see the following ones in this regard. What other tees trends do you think should females must follow in this regard? I am waiting for your responses and suggestions.
