Favorite/least favorite things in the Birchbox shop?

Recommended Posts

I've spent all my points at the moment, but I was just thinking, there have definitely been times when I've been hoarding points and not been sure what to buy! Especially if I want something in a specific category -- like, if I'm thinking I want a new black eyeliner (ha, like I need a new black eyeliner, I have like 20 black eyeliners, but you get the idea), I want someone to tell me which ones in the Birchbox shop are good, without having to look up reviews of every product. Or sometimes, I've bought something and loved it or hated it, and maybe I think other people should know.

Basically, I have wished before that a thread existed solely to discuss things you can buy in the birchbox shop, and so now I'm making one for anyone else who has ever wished the same thing :) I know sometimes the other BB threads get sidetracked by product discussions, but I thought a dedicated spot for it would be nice.

I'll start with this:

If anyone has been wondering which toners are good, I tried the Paula's Choice skin balancing toner and the Michael Todd algae one. PC was fine, but I'm really loving the MT one! It's very refreshing and I like that it has tea tree oil.

I've been feeling like I need to up my face makeup game -- concealer, powder, foundation -- so if anyone has any good recs from the BB shop, that'd be awesome! I have red, blotchy combination skin, pretty fair and neutral to cool toned.

I'm a big, big fan of wishlists. So when I joined BB last month, the first thing I did was look for products I wanted to try (I'm pretty new to the whole makeup scene, having just gotten back into it after basically not wearing much except for special occasions for over 10 years), so it's a long list so far (about 20 items). If I see a product I like, I add it to my Favorites. As I build up points from reviewing products, I'll start to use those points on what I really want at that time from my Favorites. For example, I know the first thing I'll buy is an Eyeshadow Palette (not sure what brand, but PopBeauty is on my list and the Revealed palettes as well), since I don't have any.

BB favorites

- Eyeko liquid liner and mascara

- Sample favorite packs: like Caudalie, Dr. Brandt and M+G

- Jurlique Rose Love Balm

- Caudalie Lip Conditioner

- Coastal Scents Revealed Palettes

- DDF Ultra Lite Oil Free Moisturizing Dew

- Paula's Choice Liquid Exfoliant

I'm sure I have more blahs. I just can't think of them at the moment.

I've been really interested to try the PC liquid exfoliant. A lot of people I have read swear by it. Luckily I have some samples of it coming to try for free before I buy.

One of my favorite items in the birchbox shop is Marvis toothpaste. I know this sounds silly but it's excellent and it's cheaper on birchbox than me buying it the only other place I have seen it here in NYC (Eataly).

I also love some tools I have bought from the BB shop: tweezers an brow scissor set & Spornette Little Wonder (excellent teaser for some extra volume).

Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm for Lips is also great if you don't want to spend money on the Fresh balms (which I prefer, but Dr. lipp is a close second).

C.O. Bigelow Mentha Shimmer Lip tint is really nice.

Yes to. Blueberries cleansing towlettes are great.

They have some nice Gorjana stuff in the shop if that is your style (I love their studs).

Folle de Joie eau de Parfum is my absolute favorite scent. They have some great Atelier Cologne scents too.

Benefit high brow is something I use daily. I'm interested to try to two-sided Anastasia one which BB also sells.

Amika products are EXCELLENT. I swear by their nourishing mask, dry shampoo, ph shampoo and smoothing balm.

Liz earl cleanser isn't bad.

Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara is pretty darn good for a $13 mascara.

Joure and Laura Mercier lip glosses are both good.

Ruffian polishes.

P.s. Often when I'm buying something from sephora I check if it's on birchbox. A lot of times I can get codes for % off on birchbox! plus if can use points! plus I can get points! plus the pick two. So it makes me prefer birchbox unless I have a good GWP code from sephora.

I've never liked anything I've tried from Pop Beauty, but I hear the Revealed palettes are good. The Stila palettes on BB are decent, but my favorite eyeshadow palettes there are the ones from theBalm - I have Meet Matte Nude and Nude Tude, and both are awesome!

I love the Caudalie favorites pack and the DDF moisturizing dew is amazing. I agree with not being impressed with the Paula's choice exfoliant. It was an oily mess on my face and smelled awful!

I have to also agree on the Caudalie favorites pack. I have alreafy bought it twice. It's a great value: the Beauty Elixir retails for $18. The first kit I purchase came with a divine oil that retailed for $9.00. I mostly buy the kit for the Beauty Elixir and the Hand & Nail Cream.

I like it especially for the lip conditioner, it's usually $15! The only thing I don't like is the hand & nail cream, but I usually can trade that in an instant!

I bought a lovely little Mally Beauty kit a couple months ago, that has a blush, shadow, mascara and lip gloss. The colors are universally flattering and for around $40.00 (I don't quite remember the whole price because I used some points on it) it turned out to be a great little value. I also love me some Atelier Cologne and have bought several. You cannot go wrong with Orange Sanguine!

I have thoughts about a few products from recent orders!

Laura Geller The Real Deal Concealer - meh. This is suuuuper yellow which I guess might make it good for correcting intense dark circles but it doesn't really work for what I want it to, color-wise. The coverage is good, but it also doesn't blend particularly well. Might use it sometimes but will not repurchase.

Benefit Gimme Brow - new HG brow product! I seriously love this, and it's so simple. I am lazy with my makeup on weekday mornings so this is perfect.

Stila Convertible Color in Peony - this is my 5th Convertible Color, so I know I love the formula, but I'm surprised at how much I like this color. I use it as sort of a contour/neutral blush -- not like, intense contouring, but it can help bring out the cheekbones for sure. It's also good when I don't want blush that might clash with my eye or lip color. I apply this (like all my cream blushes) with a stippling brush - I have one from Real Techniques and one from Elf.

We are all posting favorites but the thread also asked for least favorites... I have to say, Benefit's Oh La Lift is a joke. It was so disappointing for me when I ordered it. It did nothing. What a waste. I used it once and now I'm stuck with a whole tube of it! I always say one day I will put it in the fridge and give it another try, but there are just so many better products out there that I haven't wasted the time.

Some of my picks:

Least Favorite/never again:

  • Amika Nourshing mask - loved it at first…but after a few uses, it didn't do anything for my hair.
  • Spornette cushion brush - horrible.  Maybe ok for fine hair.
  • Zhena's Gypsy Tea - I've had better tea.  I see this stuff all the time now at TJMaxx/Home Goods.
  • Quirky Stem - worked really great at first…but now it only works a tiny bit, even after cleaning it like crazy.
  • Alima pure lip tints - mine got grainy after a few uses

LOVED

  •  Revealed palettes (both) - I think these Coastal Scents shadows last longer on me then UD does. The price point is much better for my wallet too.
  • Eyeko liners (my HG go to for my top lid liner)
  • Baggu totes - LOVE these for food shopping.
  • Dr. Lipp - this stuff SAVED my lips during the winter.  I put it on EVERY night before bed.
  • Caudalie Divine Oil - HG hair product.  Does nice things to my skin as well.

Want to try

  • Caudalie lip Conditioner
  • CS Revealed Sleek Silhouette Palette set --sitting in my basket, haven't pulled the trigger
  • Ruffian in Blue Lagoon
  • ANYTHING from Malin + Goetz

I was also disappointed in the Alima lip tints and felt the same way about the graininess.

Love the revealed pallet as well.

The Caudalie lip conditioner is amazing!

Also, I love the Blue Lagoon Ruffian

I'm pretty turned off by juice beauty too. I have one of their lip glosses and when I wear it, it gives me like a weird stomach ache.

One thing I wanted to add to the favorites list. The makeup remover they are using in birchbox soho made my skin feel awesome when I was switching away on my hands. It is the Klorane Floral Water Makeup Remover with Soothing Cornflower.

Omg I can't stand juice beauty either. It's something about them that's a turnoff and I can't put my finger on it.
