The devil doesn't only wear Prada—she wears lipstick and mascara, too. We got the scoop on the film's gorgeous looks directly from Nicki Ledermann, the makeup department head and a 15-year veteran of the film industry. Ledermann used makeup to help develop the personality of Andrea, the lead character. "Andrea is this smart, natural-looking girl who just graduated college," says Ledermann. "She slowly learns a whole different world that she never thought she could be part of." Throughout the film, Ledermann subtly progressed the makeup from low-maintenance college girl to over the top fashionista, culminating in the scenes where Andrea is in Paris for fashion week. "In the Paris scenes, her look becomes very sophisticated, with hard eyeliner and red lips," says Ledermann. "Throughout the whole movie I avoided red lips because I wanted to save something special for the end." Here, how she created the look.

To give the eyes an incandescent glow, Ledermann applied pearly white Stila Shadow Pot in Moon, $20, to the upper eyelids and lower lash line. She lined the upper lash line with Dior Crayon Eyeliner in Black, $23, and coated on lots of DiorShow Mascara in Black 090, $23. http://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/8278/20030812002803/www.sephora.com/assets/global/p.gifhttp://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/8278/20060612213213/www.sephora.com/assets/browse/tt/getLook/C14176_prod3.jpg

For a wearable red lip that doesn't overpower, Ledermann took a less is more approach, applying Benefit Benetint, $28, on the lips. She then dotted Dior Addict Lipstick in Positive Red 857, $23.50, just in the center of the lips and blended well with her fingers to create a matte, stained effect. http://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/8278/20030812002803/www.sephora.com/assets/global/p.gifhttp://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/8278/20060612213213/www.sephora.com/assets/browse/tt/getLook/C14176_prod6.jpg

I wish I could get away with red lips. It looks so beautiful on some women. It makes me look like a clown.

When searching for your red lipcolor, are you choosing the right hue for your skin's undertone?

I love to wear red lipsticks, but not like that of the look, it makes my teeth super yellow

Red lipstick makes my teeth looks more yellow. o_O But I love Maybelline's Water Shine (or is it Water Colour Shine...oh well) in Red Glazed Apple. =D

I've only done pinky red which was in the winter (you know to go with the whole xmas theme). It was one of Maybellines Limited Edition colors, came with matching nail polish.

For those who experience the "yellow teeth" look. It is because there is not enough blue undertone in it and too much yellow undertone in the lipstick.

thanks for the post. I used to use BeneTint on my lips but I found it really drying.

Thanks for sharing. Can't wear red lipstick though, I'll look weird
