Homemade Sugar Scrub

I searched the internet this weekend for a sugar scrub recipe and there are so many out there!  So I came up with my own recipe based on the benefits of the ingredients. The brown sugar exfoliates the skin and is not as abbrasive as white sugar.  Lemon juice containes natural alpha-hydroxy acids that also aid in exfoliating.  It will also help to lighten darkening caused by sun damage.  Olive oil is a natural emoliant and will soften and moisturize skin.  Honey also aids in moisturizing but it’s best benefit is as an anitoxidant.  It helps protect from damage caused by free radicals as well as sun damage.

I intially started this project to make a lip scrub but ended up using it on my face as well.  After mixing the ingredients together I placed a small amount on my toothbrush and started to massage it onto my lips.  This didn’t work very well as the scrub worked it’s way into the bristles of the brush and not onto my lips.  So, I placed a pea sized amount on my finger and GENTLY massaged it on my lips and then rinsed, um.. and yes licked, it off my lips.  Oh my goodness!  My lips were so smooth and supple afterwards.  I wouldn’t recommend doing this everyday as I feel that it would be too abbrasive for daily use.  I would say two to three times a week would keep your pucker plenty pouty!

This little experiment worked so well that I gave the scrub a try on my face.  I found I did have to apply it a little differently.  I moistened my face and hands with warm water first and then VERY GENTLY massaged about a half dollar sized amount all over my face avoiding my eye area.  I then left the mixture on for about 15 minutes and rinsed it off thoroughly.  WOW!  My skin was super smooth.  It felt almost as soft as baby’s skin.  I would only recommend using this on the face once a week.  I’m really excited about mixing up my own specialty beauty products now.  There are some more ingredients I want to try out and some essential oils I’d like to try.  I will keep you posted with new recipes as I have a chance to make them and test them.  Here’s my basic sugar scrub recipe and some pics I took along the way.

4 teaspoons of Brown Sugar

1/4 teaspoon of Lemon Juice

1/4 teaspoon of Olive Oil

1/4 teaspoon of Honey

1 Empty Bare Minerals jar cleaned thoroughly.  Use whatever container you have handy that seals well. In a dish mix all ingredients and spoon into jar or container with a lid.
