When it comes to eyeliner, there are more decisions to make besides just what color you want to wear – you have to decide whether you want to use it in liquid or pencil form. Which is better? Read on for some of the pros and cons – then let us know what you prefer in the comments!

Why it works:

  • Liquid eyeliner is usually more vibrant or bolder in color.
  • If you hate smudges, liquid is definitely the way to go.
  • For a very defined line, choose a liquid eyeliner instead.

Why you should avoid it:

  • This type of eyeliner can be difficult to apply, especially if you use a brush.
  • Because they’re liquid, these eyeliners won’t last as long in your makeup bag.
  • It’s very difficult to create a smokey eye with a liquid liner

Why it works:

  • Pencil eyeliners have a longer shelf life, so you don’t need to replace them as fast.
  • If you’re new to applying eyeliner, pencils are easier to use.
  • Because you don’t have to be as careful, pencil eyeliners apply faster.

Why you should avoid it:

  • Sadly, pencil eyeliners tend to smudge more throughout the day.
  • It’s harder to get a very defined line with pencils.
  • The tip of these eyeliners change, meaning you’ll have to adjust.

Final verdict: When it comes down to it, which eyeliner you choose really depends on what sort of look you’re trying to achieve. For beginners or those who want a smudgier, smokier look, use a pencil eyeliner – like N.Y.C Waterproof Eyeliner Pencils or Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Liner. If you’re more advanced in the ways of eyeliner application or prefer a dramatic, clean line, try a liquid liner – like Lime Crime Liquid Eyeliner or Lancome Artliner!
