So I want to go from Black to Brown hair. I have no idea how to go about this. Will it show up on my hair? Do I need to go a couple shades lighter or use something before I color.

I would love anyone's help/advice on this.

And even though I know the best thing is to go to a stylist I can't

(And please don't tell me how much I'll regret not going to a professional. I'm already regreting spending my summer savings on MU and useless room junk.)

Don't even attempt it...I have naturally black hair myself & would never think of going brown...First of all, it won't take & ..you would have to go to the colorist & have your color totally stripped out - then the brown shade applied - Its a double process and a pain in the ass....I'm sure Janelle will explain it better to you once she signs on tonight....

They're right... you have to bleach out the color first before you would see anything lighter. Black is the darkest color... and you can't go lighter without stripping it. I honestly wouldn't bleach yourself if you haven't done it before... so you might want to wait on this one..

throughout highschool, i have experimented on my own, and been to a stylist. and to be honest, it doesn't look as good going to a hair stylist, but it's possible. i also have black hair, and wanted to go brown. i tried so many times to dye it myself, but it didn't show up. so i applied a bleach, and left it on for like 5-10min (i have fine hair, so it's harder to absorb, but if u have thick hair, it should absorb fast!!)

and then after u wash it out, don't freak, it looks like a bad dye job.

just apply brown dye (like a dark-medium brown) and everything would be fine. even tho u messed up a lil (like uneveness on the bleach) since the color ur going for is a brown, it'll cover it up.

Second Nature 136N, Light Natural Blonde; Second Nature 141RO, Strawberry Blonde
The Stroke
Step 1: Create the canvas

Lighten the base while counteracting contributing pigment by using a cool-based permanent color applied in a virgin application.
Try 2 oz. Miss Clairol 32D, Moonhaze with 1 oz. 36D, Moonlit Brown with 3 oz. 30-volume developer.
Step 2: Create dimension

Foil with concentration of lightness around the hairline, less lightening around the crown. Rinse, shampoo and towel-dry thoroughly. Follow with strategically placed highlights where your creation deserves even lighter and brighter pieces.
Try BW2 Dedusted Powder Lightener mixed with 20-volume developer to desired consistency.
Step 3: Add Color Glaze

Utilize Second Nature No-Lift Color to add a wash of color over the final creation.
Try 1 1/2 oz. Second Nature 136N, Light Natural Blonde and 1/2 oz. 141RO, Strawberry Blonde mixed with 2 oz. 10-volume developer.
