Choosing the right shade of eye shadow can be a daunting task, especially when shimmers, mattes, and frosts are thrown into the mix. Whether you’re a brown-eyed babe or a green-eyed goddess, our October issue of StyleWatch features the best eye shadows and tips for your eye color. Here, more great tips to make your eyes pop from Clarins celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose, who works on stars like Mischa Barton.

–Brown-eyed beauties rejoice! When it comes to eye shadows, you have the most options because brown is a neutral color that won’t clash with eye makeup. Just make sure that earth tones like brown, taupe or khaki are spiked with gold to keep the color from looking drab.

–Contrast is key. When selecting your eye shadow, choose one with a bit of contrast from your skin tone in order to keep the shade from disappearing on the skin and washing you out.

–Daytime shadow doesn’t have to be boring. Fun colors like metallics and shimmers can be worn during the day too. The best way to wear them is in small doses such as swipe of color or shimmer along the upper lash line. Mixing bolder colors with earth tones also keeps the look day-appropriate.
