Fall Makeup Trends 2007

A New Makeup Look for Each Month

© Lindsey Michelle

Follow these trends from September through the New Year.

Summer’s bright eye shadow and Popsicle-stained lips move aside for deeper hues once fall arrives. However, fall makeup doesn’t equal “boring†– on the contrary, there are a vast number of choices and colors that compliment every skin tone for autumn. Try a different trend each month from September through the first of the year – the compliments will be endless!

September: The colorful smoky eye

Though kids return to school and pictures of leaves dot the calendar, in most states, September is still warm. If people paid attention only to the temperature and not to the calendar, everyone would dress in September just as they do in August. But many admit to eagerly awaiting trying out their fall clothes and makeup. A way to jump right in – but still look appropriate for warm days – is to try a “smoky eye†but not use gray or black eye shadow. Instead, choose a shade such as green, blue, purple or taupe (depending on your skin tone and the situation.) The look is in-between summer and fall, fun and sophisticated at the same time. If the color seems too bright or heavy, dip an eye shadow brush in white or pale pink powder and cover the color slightly to tone down.

October: 1960s-inspired makeup

Magazines and catalogs have been showing 1960s-inspired clothes and makeup for fall. Key mod looks are heavy eyes and pale lips, but since this is 2007, a little updating is key. Line eyes with semi-dark pencil, but be sure to follow with shadow in the same color and blend until the look is on the softer side. Curl lashes before applying mascara to ensure that lashes appear lush. It’s difficult to pull off pale lips – admit it, it’s a little odd… does any woman really want her lips to disappear? Update this by finding a shade of lipstick that is close to your natural lip color. This way you’re enhancing your lips without neutralizing them.

November: Matte

Fall runway models showed off total matte faces, including skin. It’s a bit much for day-to-day wear, but the best way to imitate this runway look for everyday is to keep skin as clean and non-oily as possible. This can be accomplished by maintaining a skin regime that works for your skin type and, if you have combination or oily skin, being sure that you zap excess oil with whatever works best for you – such as toner or blotter sheets. Use powder eye shadow, not cream (and put a base under your shadow if necessary.) Lip gloss is usually very shiny, so choose a lipstick instead.

December: Metallics

Yes, this contradicts last month’s testimony regarding the trend of matte makeup. But do you really think December will come and go without a return to metallic makeup? After all, metallics have been popular for ages. What an ideal month to really experiment with them – holiday gatherings, parties and outdoor events are in need of a littlee shine. First decide which type of metallic you prefer. Does your skin look better next to silver or gold? There are also color-metallics, though they usually have a base undertone of silver or gold. Powder eye shadow gives a shimmery or glittery look, while cream eye shadow is often obaque and intense (unless it’s a very sheer formula). Cheek glaze can also be metallic, and looks best if your eyes aren’t too shiny. Lipstick can be available in metal-inspired hues, but be warned that, even at a party, metallic lipstick often has a bit of a junior-high connotation. Best bet: keep the shimmer in the eyes or cheeks.

Interesting info. and it seems to go along with the makeup colors and textures that have been coming out for fall.
