Ok girls and guys. I need some input. I'm pretty computer literate and know what I want. I just want some feedback on brands. I have, for the past 17 years, always owned HP but I've never had a laptop except the work one that I'm using when I come here. I'm ready to retire my desktop and get something more mobile. Tell me which brand you have and if you like it. Any problems, how is customer service etc. Thanks!!!!

My hubby always gets the sony laptop. It's pretty good...except for the fact that it usually dies just after the warranty expires. We've bought two sony 17 inch laptops..and both died and now are sitting on the floor. We are definitely not going to purchase another one. Waste of money and sh1t expensive too!

I had a friend just purchase a dell and he loves the dell laptops. He had his old one for 4 years and just upgraded it and the customer service is great too. The only thing about dell is that you can only purchase it on their website. if i remember correctly, i don't think you can purchase them in shops.

In addition, we are planning on buying a 3rd laptop..and dell is topping our list at the moment..so far

The ones that we have are the Acer Aspire 5315-2153. They were the pre black friday sale at walmart. Im not sure if they have them anymore since they only had 30 in but you can always check. The acer laptops have been around the longest is what I was told. I like it, it get can get annoying at times when I hit the touch pad and what Im writing goes somewhere else but thats all on me otherwise I like it. Ive never owned a laptop before so Im happy with this one. Better than having a desktop.

I have a Compaq by HP and since HP acquired them they have gone down hill big time... 3rd motherboard and 2nd CPU...

I bought a cheapy Dell Inspiron 120 for my daughter... less than $400 with built in wireless and extra memory.. And she beats the crap out of it... After 2 years she started having screen problems (her fault - the way she yanks it open) so I called Dell after I extended the warantee.... They send a box the next day and withing 5 days we had it back all fixed.. No charge and this guy "Bob" from India... would call me to let me know how the repairs were going and if I had any questions... Daily!!! I was amazed!!!

Not sure if you want to switch but back in December, I bought macbook pro and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Yes, they are more expensive than a Windows based laptop, it isn't compatible with as many programs and its different in the way it runs than Windows.

However...

MACs rarely if ever get viruses. That for me was the big sell point. Not having to worry about trojans and spyware. Uggh!

Yes there are programs that aren't compatible with it - well, a lot of programs are so the chance that a program that you use will be MAC compatible. I have Quicken, Photoshop, Real Player, Window Media Player and Microsoft office running on my MAC and they work fantastic.

Difference - yes there is a difference in the operating system and the way you do things but it is so much simpler. For example: How do you install a program? Download it and drag it to the applications folder. Simple. To uninstall, go to the application folder and Move to Trash. Simple as that.

Anyways, for me getting my macbook has been worth it. Just ask Leony!

Personally, the MacBook Pro was one of the best investments I have ever made. I simply love it. At first I was worried about the compatability issues, differences in the operating system and so on but now I am hooked. It's so suprisingly simple!

Marisol explained it all very well!

First off - you need to know your budget and how much you're willing to spend because it can be a bit pricey for top notch computer.

Then go to PCworld.com or any other website that gives you reviews on lappys.

I'm poor so I've opted for a compaq because it had good reviews and was very affordable.

If I had the cash I would go either withthe Apple or Sony brand.

it really depends on your needs and wallet. if it's just for basic stuff, you don't need an expensive one. be careful for the battery though, most of my friends having a laptop for uni only have batteries that last 2 hours continuously, meaning for classes of 3 hours, they need a wall socket. kind of kills the whole "mobile" thing.

if you want one to play online games, Acer makes one which is currently one of the best on the market, it's called g1s. comes with Vista home. you can burn DVDs (you can even make fancy disks because of the laser writing ^^), you have a webcam, bluetooth, wi-fi, USB and TV ports, intel core 2 processor, hard disk 160Gb, 2Gb DDR2, Nvidia GeForce 6800GT graphic card. screen : 15.4".

comes with a mouse (Logitech MX500 i think) and a super cute and solid backpack to carry it.

it cost my brother around 1500€, so kind of pricey, but really a great laptop.

My oldest son is a computer engineer and he and my youngest, who works for a software company both suggest Apple. The youngest has an Apple and loves it-the older son gets a laptop from work so he has no need to buy one. We have a Compaq laptop which is we use as an internet appliance. We bought it because it was inexpensive.

I know nothing but what about Toshiba. Since your daughter's hubby is in Kuwait-do these not have a built in webcam. I think they are supposed to be pretty good too. Kook

I have always wanted to own a MAC, don't have any advice (since i don't own one) but I hear a lot of good things. As Marisol summed it up in her post, they're a lot of pros to owning one. Plus they're stylish!

Dell. Plus if you search hard enough online, you can find coupons worth up to $500. I love my Dell.
