If it is hosted by work then you have to be prepared to impress the big wigs. Otherwise, if you don't care too much about impressing the host or coworkers go as you are, but you might apologise to your host for not dressing up, but I wouldn't tell them you didn't know, you don't need to give a reason.

I'd rock whatever I was wearing like it was formal, and eat me some BBQ! I have had situations like this where I was dressed way different than everyone else, doesn't really bother me. I just laugh at myself.
