Here's a little background...

My husband and I were going to do some shopping the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We were going down the interstate and somehow my husband lost control of the vehicle. We started swerving into the median at 70 mph and ended up rolling the SUV several times onto the northbound side of the interstate. We are okay, but of course the SUV is not. We still had money left to pay on the loan for the car. We were able to pay it off and everything, but now we are looking for a car.

Well here is my frustration---

Everyone seems to know what we should do with our lives and how we should spend our money and what kind of car we should buy. And of course people say if you didn't have an SUV you wouldn't have flipped. That SUV was the only thing that saved our lives. Anyways... We don't have the cash upfront to pay for a car. We didn't know we were gonna have a car wreck! It just seems like everyone knows how to run our lives except for us. And they like to remind us all the time that we are just the young, dumb newlywed couple. We really do the best we can though. No matter what though, we have to get a loan for another car. I just feel so frustrated about it all. There is no way around needing a car. Its a necessity not a want. We have to get to school and work. It is just a matter of getting a loan and everything.

Thanks for letting me vent.. If anyone has any suggestions or car buying hints, feel free to share!

MY first suggestion is get preapproved for a loan. It gives you more power when You are negotiating. I did this once through eloan.com and had a check in my hand in 3 days then walked in. picked out my car, told them what I was willing to pay and drove out. it was the most painless car buying experience ever

As far as people giving you a hard time: Most people try to be helpful but dont always choose their wording carefully. The most important thing is that you and your husband keep a united front. you are each others family now and unless you have someone paying all your bills for you, it's really no one's business. Which you can respectfully remind them of. Most couples were young newlyweds at some point in their relationship, right?? Don't let it get to you. Yall just take care of each other and let it go in one ear and out of the other. Good Luck!!

Sorry that you were in an accident. The most important thing to remember is that you are both ok and that is what matters.

People will always get in your business no matter how old you are and what your situation is. But in the end, all that should matter is what you and your husband want.

no matter what your doing, how old you are, etc people will ALWAYS have something to say. I think everyone has family/friends like that. I know its hard to not let it get to you. but to hell with other people think!!

You and your husband are so lucky that you guys didn't get hurt in the accident!!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

Shop around. They have alot of certified used cars now. Shop around. It may take a few days but you will find what you are looking for.

People always forget that they were once the young newlywed couples who didnt have all the life experiences behind them, and that they didnt know everything either. Just glad your ok! Whatever you do, Im sure will be the right decision for you!

Preowned from a dealer may be just the ticket (please excuse the pun). Kelly is right, get preapproved and have "cash" in hand when you shop. There are good deals around if you look. The car biz is hurtin' right now and it's a good time to buy. What type, model etc are you looking for?

Wow!! It's nice to know you're okay from the accident!. I'm not really sure what else to say but good luck with everything!

Here is some advice from a former car salesman! First shop a loan! That means find a bank to agree to loaning you a certain amount! Get the interest rates, car dealers are notorious of adding interest "points" on the loans, they count on you NOT being informed.
Second negotiate!! Low ball them! If you have to walk out, they WILL call you back in probably before you make it to your car. The deal is they expect three offers from you, some salesmen are trained that you are not serious about a car unless you make three offers or just give the asking price.

Third find the car you want when they are closed. Then go home and research the Kelly Blue Book value. The dealer goes off the "retail value" of the car not trade or loan value so keep that in mind. They WILL go under this. The care probably was purchased for less than trade value and unless the car is a hot item they will come down. Forget about negotiating much for the hybrids like the Prius, they are hot sellers.

To aid in your research take a picture of the options the car comes with. These options are almost always posted on the windshield or window sticker.

It can be a hassle to purchase a car but the research will be worth while. You don't want to be screwed and be so far "upside down" on your car that you can't get out of it if you decide to sell.

What type, model etc are you looking for? We will most likely be going through a dealer unless we can just find a private seller who is willing to work with us. We are looking at Mitsubishi Montero Sport or something along those lines. We had a Isuzu Rodeo, but I dont think we will be getting another one.

Thank you for your great advice! We are trying to do a lot of research. My husband is way more picky about that kind of stuff than I am. I am passing your advice along to him.
Thanks everyone for your kind words and suggestions. We definitely feel so lucky that we are alive. Its better the car being wrecked than something happening to us. And, I definitely think our family and friends sometimes forget what it is like to be in our shoes. We are not where they are at in life, so it is easy for them to assume. It's not that we do not take their suggestions or advice, but it feels like we get told 50012432 different things to do. We already feel so stretched, but we are so thankful that we are alive and that we can get a different vehicle.

Well in the end it is your hursband's and your decision. But I think it is very smart to get advice, information, etc from somebody who is an elder. You do not have to agree to what they say, but some of the information they give you is very helpful. They just care about you.

And the most imporatant thing is both of you are safe thank God.
