well, I just feel a bit tired and stuck.

I want a new job. My current job is not offering me enough shifts, and to be perfectly honest, I dont want to ask for any more because I've just about had enough of that job - I've almost been working there for 3 years and I would really like a change.

I've been looking on the job website, SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site - I've applied for about 15 jobs, and almost all of them have not even bothered to reply, although it's obvious I havent got the job.

The thing is, I have retail experience, I have reception experience, but I'm really not suitable for administration or personal assistant jobs since that's not my area.

I'm not prepared to settle for less money that I'm recieving now unless the job sounds really good, but I havent even got that far - I havent been asked to go to any interviews, and the same jobs keep coming up over and over again.

I just feel like I'm getting nowhere
I'm a good employee, all I want is a secretarial style job that is looking for someone to work 9-5 3 odd days a week!

why is this so hard? and has anyone got any suggestions on what I can do? I'm pretty sure i need to change my approach but I cant think of what else to do!

I feel the same as you! I think if you have receptionist experience that you should be able to get a personal assistant job or administrative job. Its all about selling yourself, and you need to contact offices so that they know you are really interested. Applying online rarely works because they get so many other people applying that you get lost in the shuffle. Also in administration companies want alot more than a person to just answer the phone they want to hire people that they know they can practically run the business without them (and pay you less). I dont think I helped but im on the same boat as you! lol

What I have learned is that, don't do anything over the computer. If I want a job, I'll usually just go in with my resume. Applying over the computer takes FOREVER, and they call you like 4 months later in most cases.

isn't it weird that they could technically call you the next day when they've read your resume and instead you hear from then like a billion years later if at all?

thanks girls, I'm going to keep trying, it's just I was thinking to myself how satisfying having a good job would be, and I don't have one! and christmas money! I wont have much. Being a student sucks. End Grumble (for now, LOL)

Well I am in the same boat too. I have sent out around 130 resumes by email, fax, and through the mail. I have been looking for a different job for about 10 months. I have been on 18 interviews (why I am counting is beyond me!) and I have had 2 offers, but the pay is so low and no benefits, so I declined those. I am even in a worse boat because I have a college degree and some jobs will not call me back because they think I am over qualified. Some interviews I have went on were because of my degree, but the pay is so insulting that I don't take them.

There should be quite a few job openings though if you are looking for part-time work while you are going to school. Some places are looking for seasonal employees, such as the mall etc. I just wanted to wish you luck! Take care.

Isnt that just ridiculous that you cant get a job even if you have a degree? Its like a no win situation.

I know! especially if it's something really general like business or commerce - unless you specialise! and a degree like mine which is in no way practical at all is definately not going to get me a job!

and then the other side of things - those jobs that you COULD do, but dont have a degree for, so they wont even give you a chance. I don't mean things like dr or nurse but other things that you might have a lot of relevant experience in but no actual piece of paper saying you're qualified

good luck!! Honestly it's ridiculous! well we'll see how I go, of course, now that I've been applying for jobs left right and centre my boss asks if I want extra shifts in december and january! and like even though I'm only a casual worker I feel bad accepting extra shifts that I don't know if I will be able to do, but on the other hand, I don't want to turn down work when i havent even got interviews. Stupid everything!

Stupid everything! Better to plan ahead in case you don't find something that you want. I hate searching for a job. I'm getting ready to do the same thing and the thought makes me sick but I wish you good luck.

Hi Rosie.

When it comes to job hunting, I'm a bit old fashioned.

I dress for the job I want, and get out there and knock door to door.

I introduce myself to the receptionist and let them know I am interested in working for thier company. I try to leave a good impression and always leave a resume.

A thing about resumes - do not use the same one for different jobs. Have a clerical one for clerical jobs, have a technical one for technical jobs, etc.

About a week later a make phone calls to ensure my resume was distributed to the Human Resources - and would they like to interview me.

If all goes well and I get an interview, I immediately send a thank you note to the interviewer.

So you can see I wasn't just applying to posted jobs like 100's of others.

And I got the opportunity to make a few great impressions that so many others do not.

Best of luck hun.

I agree with Carolyn. I would also check out temp agencies and maybe your University has job postings or a job resource center for students. I hope this helps! Please keep us updated Rosie!
