So, I've tried lipstick a bunch of times and none of the colors that I have tried in the past have looked right on me. I'm trying to get into it again, so I just bought a pack of whitestrips and I am currently searching for good kinds of lipsticks to try.

I am looking to find either a set of lipsticks (preferably at least a pack of 5-12), or just a good brand of inexpensive individual lipsticks that I could buy a variety of colors in. I am willing to spend up to $20-25, and I don't mind if they are "mini-lipsticks" either. I am hoping that some of you will be able to recommend some lipstick sets/brands to me. (Preferably ones that you can buy online.)

I searched for a bit and I found what seemed to be a decent looking 12 pack on amazon:

but some of the reviews make me hesitant to buy them, because they say that the colors aren't as pigmented as the picture, and complaints of the lipsticks being melted and stuck to the tubes.

Color-wise, I am looking for a nice bright red, a lightish pink, golden/bronze, dark red, and maybe a purples/fuschia. I would appreciate any specific color recommendations you might have too, though. I don't really know how to pick out the right colors for myself.

If it helps, I am really pale with bright green eyes (my avatar is my eye), and my hair is black around my face and the back is a medium brown (Feria's "French Roast")

I would appreciate any suggestions you may have! Thank you so much for reading!

I would try some of the Wet 'n' Wild lipsticks. They are readily available, inexpensive and have quite a variety of colors. They are available in most drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc.

I would also recommend looking for other people with your skin tone and hair/eye colors and see what types of colors they are wearing. I have found that really helps me because there are colors that I thought looked gorgeous on other people, but then I tried them on myself and they just looked off. Then I started looking on Pinterest and similar sites and paying attention mainly to hair and eye color. I think skin tone plays in too, but more in the way of subtle tones (like types of reds). At least that has been my experience so far.

Have you considered lip glosses or glazes too? I have noticed that some tones are too harsh on me as lipsticks, but I can use a similar tone in a lip gloss and it blends better. It might help you choose colors as well (and glosses tend to be less expensive as well).

Wet N Wild are great too, I just bought one of the MegaLast matte lipsticks tonight and have already tried it and loved it.

I would try the NYX round lipsticks--they've gone up in price since last year, but you can still get them for $3 at most places (e.g. cherryculture). In terms of pigmentation I actually think WnW is better (at least the megalast ones) but the NYX lipsticks come in a billion different shades.

You can change the hue of your lipstick by wearing a lipliner underneath; e.g. if your red lipstick isn't as dark as you'd like, wear a dark lip liner underneath :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />.

My favorite lipsticks are from Silk Naturals. They come in the slim lip balm tubes, and are around $4.50 each. I have a lot of problems with drugstore lipsticks drying out my lips and prefer more naturals products, so that's how I came across Silk Naturals. They have a bazzilion colors to choose from, sheer, pigmented, sparkly, matte, they have it all. I probably have about 30 of their lipsticks :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

EDIT: I forgot to add that for the holidays they have these lip palettes, which is a good and cheap way to try multiple colors.

I would say rather than buying sets, go to a counter and try them out! If you spend 25 dollars on a set and only find one color you like, you'll end up spending more than just finding one you like at a counter.

I love mac lipsticks. They're not horrendously expensive and will last you a long time. Go to the counter or store nearest you and talk to their artists. They're there to help you!

I agree, you should try Wet n Wild lipsticks. They are cheap, but surprisingly pigmented. Instead of going by lists of popular shades, find the shades that are right for you. When I first bought lipstick, I followed general favorite lists online but they mostly ended up not matching. Once I figured out my skin tone shade, I was able to look at lipstick shades for my skin tone shade online. Hope that helps!

I would suggest buying lipsticks from the drugstore one tube at a time. If you buy from a set, and realize you don't like the formula, you'll be stuck with A LOT of lipsticks. I recommend a trusted drugstore brand like Revlon. Even pro makeup artists like Lisa Eldridge use Revlon lipsticks. Their matte formulas are popular, as well as their creams. The Revlon packages say the names of the colors and the type of formula (pearl, cream, matte, etc) on the end of the tube. Buy one at a time and see what you like. Try a matte, a cream, etc., in different colors. If it were me, though, I'd try a different approach! Instead of trying drugstore products, which can be really hit or miss, go to a makeup counter at a department store, and put down $35 dollars on one lipstick you know is quality in a color you like. Everyone looks great in red lipstick, so why not invest in a really nice one that will last you a long time? Also you can't swatch or try on lipstick at the drugstore, but at the counter you can do both.

I can't rave enough about rimmel lipsticks Kate moss collection. Seriously! Up there w Mac and smashbox. Smell yummy and some great colors, cheap too! Target, Kmart Walgreens all have them!

The best lipsticks are the Cle De Peau Beaute lip luminizer ones. I have dry crusty lips and shaky hands and this is the one lipstick I can apply that will look good and last until I actually intentionally wipe it off. This lipstick will not dry out your lips or smear and it comes in the most beautiful colors. My mom buys me them from Bergdorf Goodman. I think you can get them at Sak's and Neiman Marcus as well.
