Lip makeup has come a long way from the single-digit color choices of

the thirties, and now goes far beyond mere choice of hue. A wide variety of looks and moods can be achieved through the plethora of different lip mediums - glosses, mattes, liners, stains, etc., not to mention the myriad of combinations possible.

You may want your smackers to look smooth & precise, bold & spontaneous, or perhaps carefully natural. Let's have a look at a few of our favorite 'nude' lip makeup applications:

Nude with just lip moisturizer (try Vaselineâ„¢ Intensive Care lip moisturizer)

‘Nude Lips’ doesn’t necessarily refer to lips that are naked of all product. In fact, sometime this Au Natural look can be just as cosmetics and application intense as the more ‘made-up’ styles. We’ll take a look at a few variations of nude below, but for our purposes here, we’re talking about a true nude – just a lip moisturizer, and your own gorgeous lips versus the world!

Lip pencil with lip moisturizer

Adding just a hint of matte color can enhance the shape and appeal of your lips without drawing a lot of attention to them. This is a great strategy for a day look that emphasizes your eye makeup while drawing out the shape of your lips. For a neutral look, chose a pencil that complements your complexion – perhaps a shade darker than your skin tone. We chose a hint of taupe color to subtly draw out and define the lips.

Lip pencil with clear gloss

Lip pencils have really come a long way since the ‘80s, when I can recall scraping their dryness along my displeased lips. Moist, creamy and application-friendly lip pencils are the perfect tool to giving the wearer supreme precision control, and all kinds of choices for different looks. A lip pencil base finished with clear gloss is one of my favorite lip applications; they look great, don’t smudge nearly as much as lipstick, and seem to last forever – requiring only the occasional gloss touch-up.

Matte lipstick with lip pencil

This combo is a time-honoured classic application – for good reason. A matte color coupled with beautifully defined lines gives the wearer innumerable options for different lip looks. Smoothly change the shape and contours of your lips simply by expanding and contracting your lips natural boundaries.

Glitter lipstick with pencil

Ah, glitters and shimmers – not just for the teenie-boppers! A carefully applied layer of lip pencil finished off with a saucy glitter is a flattering and fun look that gives your pout some punch.

Lip Stain

A recent entry to lip wear, lip stain can be both versatile and distinctive. As this product can last a loooong time, it can be perfect for when touch-up opportunities are few and far-between. A good outline with lip pencil can be a good idea with lip stain, to clearly define your lips, and keep the stain from extending its boundaries. It also has a very sexy kind of feel!
