Makeup Tips and Tricks

Selecting the Right Lip Color
Your lips are the one area of your face where you can really play with color. The best way to find the right shade for you is to try it on. But here are a few guidelines to help you make a choice:
If you have dark skin you have the greatest flexibility: Plums, chocolates, reds, pastels and oranges all work with your skin. (Generally, the deeper your skin tone, the deeper the shade of lipstick you can wear and look beautiful.) If you have a medium skin tone with golden undertones, all shades of red are for you. Brown-based mauve, sheer berry or spicy brown will also look great. If you have pale skin, stick to nudes, beige tones, light corals and light pinks. Sheer formulations will probably be most flattering on you.
.................................................. ....
The Low-down on Mascara
Mascara comes in two basic types: waterproof and water-soluble. Mascaras should not smudge, flake, or clump. Price does not tell you anything about how a mascara will perform. Drugstore mascaras can be as good as any on the market, and sometimes even better.
Water-soluble mascaras: The problem with some water-soluble mascaras is that they don't come off easily with water. Luckily, there are great water-soluble mascaras that build long, thick lashes without clumping or flaking and that come off with a water-soluble cleanser.
Waterproof mascaras: These can be problematic, because in order to remove this type of mascara you must pull and wipe around the eye area. This, in turn, sags the skin and causes lashes to fall out. Waterproof mascara is fine for occasional use, but wearing it every day can cause more headaches in the long run. Another drawback is that most waterproof mascaras can break down and smear due to oil from your skin or emollients in your moisturizer or foundation. Do not make the mistake of thinking that waterproof means smear proof. (Paula Begoun)
Mistakes to Avoid
• Do not wear colored mascara such as blue, purple, or green if you're going for a professional daytime look.
• Keep an old, clean mascara wand in your makeup bag to be used for removing mascara clumps and separating lashes.
• Do not wear mascara that smears; there are lots that don't.
• Do not use waterproof mascaras on a daily basis; they are too difficult to remove and too hard on your lashes.
• Do not forget to apply mascara evenly to lower lashes.
• Do not over-apply mascara; your lashes will look clumpy

Cosmetics Shelf Lives
In general, it is best to toss out cosmetics placed near the eye (like mascara) after four to six months, and to dispose of face products (moisturizers, foundations) after one to two years. The usage time for eye-area cosmetics is more limited than for other products. Because of microbial exposure and the risk of eye infections, some industry experts recommend replacing mascara every three months. If mascara becomes dry, discard it. Do not add water or saliva to moisten it as that will introduce bacteria into the product. If you have an eye infection, consult a physician immediately, stop using all eye-area cosmetics, and discard those you were using when the infection occurred.
Other cosmetics that might have a short shelf-life are "all natural" products that may contain plant-derived substances conducive to microbial growth. It also is important for consumers to consider the increased risk of contamination in some "natural" products that contain nontraditional preservatives or no preservatives at all. (Paula B.)

Many people like Jessica Simpson’s makeup;
Makeup Artist, Karan Mitchell shows how to get the look:
Skin Prep: Karan and Jessica are addicted to Shiseido skincare products. Jessica cleanses her skin with The Skincare Gentle Cleansing Foam and moisturizes with The Skincare Day Essential Moisturizer Enriched SPF 10. To keep her skin glowing, she applies The Skincare Purifying Mask weekly.
Foundation: Karan’s favorite foundation for Jessica’s skin is MAC Face and Body Foundation in a blend of colors N4 and C6.
Concealer: Shiseido The Makeup Concealer in No. 3
Powder: Bourjois Pastel Teint Dual-Purpose Pressed Powder in Abricote 67
Cheeks: For cream cheek color, Karan always uses Ben Nye Cream Rouge
Wheel. She either uses the colors individually or blends them together to create a multitude of natural colors. For powder blushes, she loves Bourjois Pastel Blusher in Brun Cuivre 03, Brun D’Or 30 or Lilas D’Or 33.
Highlighting: Karan’s staple for highlighting Jessica’s skin and giving her that signature glow is the Ben Nye Fireworks Wheel. She also loves to brush on Bourjois Pastel Blusher in Lune D’Or 35.
Eye Shadows: Karan particularly likes the colors and quality of the Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow palettes. She also likes to use the Bourjois Pastel Blushers on Jessica’s eyes.
Eye Liners: Karan cannot live without her Styli-Style liners (available at Beauty Collection in Sherman Oaks, CA). For Jessica, she always uses Milan and Tokyo.
Brows: Filled in with Styli-Style liner in Milan
Lashes: L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Black
Lips: She almost always preps Jessica’s lips with The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Stain in Rose Pink. Whether she uses it alone or under gloss or lipstick, she says it gives lips a naturally pigmented look. When she lines Jessica’s lips, she likes to stay with a neutral liner. Styli-Style’s Hollywood is perfect for Jessica’s natural lip color. Some lipsticks she often uses are Bourjois’ Pour La Vie Lipsticks in Rose Perpetuel 25 and Beige Eternel 44 for natural looks and Rouge Connection Lipstick in Modele 12 for lots of drama. Her favorite glosses are Bourjois’ Ultra Gloss Lipstick in Miel Fantanas 94 and Beige Elastic 74.
Karan also added that Elizabeth Arden’s Eight-Hour Cream is a must from head to toe. She loves to dab it on the apples of Jessica’s cheeks or slick it across her eyelids for a fresh, dewy look.
