I've always hated my skin since i was about 13 (I'm now 16),I have red hair & my skin is pale and slightly freckled & very pigmented and different colours,I'm constantly spending loads of money on new products and creams but never being satisfied, the foundations are usually too dark & chalky & don't cover well at all,The creams just dont seem to have any impact at all.

It's my grad in 3-4 weeks,I'm really worried as i feel i cannot go with my skin like this and when i do makeup myself It looks chalky & obvious, besides making me look tired & slightly oily ( the foundation).I don't really wear much else apart from blusher & mascara. I was just wondering If any of you knew of some really effective, cheap ways/products that will make my skin look more uniform & less tired & ugly.

If you could help I'd be very grateful.

Ruth.

Well Hello Ruth and welcome to MakeupTalk. You will nodoubtedly get your answers here!
Welcome again

Welcome to MUT Ruth. Usually if foundation or powder appears chalky on the face it's because it's the wrong color-most likely too light or just the wrong color family. I don't know too much about drugstore brand foundations, but if you go to somewhere like Rite Aid they have testers so you can try the product out in the store before you buy it. I know Revlon's Colorstay foundation is ok, but I just don't know about the shade selection for the fairer skinned. If not Revlon, you could try Loreal or Max Factor, but again I'm not big on DS foundations so maybe someone else can help you out with this one.

Welcome Ruth! I'm Janelle - nice to meet you!

I agree with Kim on exfoliating... once you get off all those dead skin cells, you'll have smoother, more even skin to work with. CoverGirl's new foundation is pretty nice - both finish & coverage wise, and you can get away with a lot of shades, you don't really have to be exact. I think it's called "ColorBlend"... or "coverblend" (Can't think of the name right now, & I'm too lazy to dig thru my traincase)

trublend?
welcome to MUT, ruth!

i think when you tell us your skin care regimen, we can take it from there

I wash my face twice a day with some drugstore cammomile facial gel wash & exfoliator. Then i moisturise with nivea creme.

That's about all I do in the way of caring.

I sometimes steam it,about once a week.

Hi Ruth!

Sounds like you're using some nice gentle skin care products. Maybe you could try a moisturizer with soy, since soy helps with dullness and discoloration. Of course that would take time to see results, and since you want to look good for your graduation in a couple of weeks... I heartily agree with Kim that mineral foundation is a great way to go. The shades are easy to blend with your skin tone, they look natural on your skin, and give a beautiful glow--not too matte, not too dewy/oily. Perfect for any age but especially nice for a young woman like you, I think. You don't want to cake foundation on and hide your natural beauty. Mineral foundations aren't "cheap" initially, but you will find they last a long time and are so worth it!

I like that you keep your everyday makeup simple! For your special day, you could try emphasizing your eyes and lips a little more. You'll draw attention to your features and divert it away from any imperfections in your skin. I hope you like your freckles, I think freckles are so pretty!

Thankyou for you advice,I will definately look out for soy moisturiser. Is there anywhere on the net that delivers mineral foundations to the uk ?

And yes I think i will go for maybe golds or silvers or soft greens for my eyes on my grad, but I'm not sure.

Hi Ruth,

It's great to meet another girl from the Uk like myself. Personally i think freckles look cute and sexy! I have quite bad skin myself with spots etc but i was thinking you might want to try a makeup with a full coverage. On my spotty days i wear Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish cream foundation. It can be applied with a dry sponge (provided in the compact). Perhaps another specialist brand like Dermablend (there are other's) would be more what your looking for. I will try and find out what other brands like dermablend there are for you to try. They specialise in complete coverage.

Hi Ruth,

I hated my skin when I was your age too...I had pimples and skintone was really uneven. Now I love it though, it gets better once you grow out of puberty I promise! Now I love my skin!

I have to second the minerals make up too. It has worked wonders for me. I used to use drugstore and I was really bad at picking out my shade so it always looked horrible. Then I used Lancome for a while which was better, but I still didn't like wearing it. Now I use Bare Escentuals and the results are amazing. My skin tone is even, but it looks like I'm not wearing anything! It's very natural and pretty. Totally worth the money. Do they have Ulta in the UK? If so, you can test the colors out there to pick out the best shades and you can also play with the other face products (concealers, all over colors, etc.)

Also for graduation, you could always go to the makeup counter at the dept. store and ask them to do your makeup for grad. It should be free and then you can see if you like the results and want to invest in the products.

It's good to know you had the same thing as me,maybe there is hope for me haha. But yes my skin is very uneven & ununiform and i have lots of little bumps on my skin & dry patches which despite regularly exfoliating won't go away therefore making the foundation sit badly on my skin.

I don't think they have Ulta in the uk but I'll look into it.

I just don't really have the money to spare right now for expensive products & stuff.

But I'll look around.

I think Sephora also carries Bare Escentuals, which I believe you can order it online from them @ sephora.com

It sounds to me that Cetaphil products (cleanser & moisturizer) might be good for your apparently super-sensitive skin. You definitely need sun protection as well; I believe Neutrogena has a good line of gentle sun protection specifically formulated for the face. Also, if you're going to exfoliate, use something VERY gentle. Do NOT use St. Ives Apricot Scrub. That stuff does nothing but make my skin even more angry, even the sensitive skin formula. Also, you should never exfoliate if you're are experiencing an active breakout.

Overall, I think you should just make sure everything you use is oil-free and fragrance-free. I agree that the Revlon Colorstay foundation would give you great coverage. I am pretty fair, and they still have one shade that's lighter than the one I need. Loreal True Match foundation has a great selection of shades but they are not oil-free and it severely irritated my skin. CoverGirl is also not good due to the fact that for some really dumb reason all of their stuff is infused with the scent of Noxzema. I also do not recommend foundation primers since they only suffocate your skin.

Once you get some money saved up, I'd highly recommend that you visit a Dermablend counter. Their products provide the type of coverage that I think you're looking for.

Why don't you try the mystic tan? It'll give your face more a tan looked without all the makeup. It lasted me a couple weeks. Sometimes when you try to hide something under all that makeup, it only "brings out" that quality that you are trying to hide. To get rid of the tired skin, try changing your eating habit, drinks lots of water and drop the soda.

It's quite hard to just change your diet but I will try.

Ruth, so sorry to hear about your skin care dilemma. I think you would be the perfect candidate for the Elizabeth Grant day and night serums. She has products on (I believe) Ideal World , your tv shopping channel. The serums will give you instant glow, and 24 hr hydration and you'll see your face come alive! I don't know how much these products are in Europe, but I would certainly look into this.
