I am not sure if this is inappropriate for this board, but I'd like some help. My older brother, Mark has a 90% chance of being sent to Afghanistan in May. He is in the Army reserves and is a bit surprised. He was in the Gulf War as part of the 82nd airborne. This time he did not volunteer but was volunteered by a fellow sargent.

I would like to ask for prayers for those of you who pray. We are hoping that he does not have to go. He has a 6 month old baby and a 4 year old little girl. We are pretty upset and could use all the prayers possible so that he may have a greater chance to stay here. I am going to contact our congressmen and do whatever I can.

Thanks... I really , really appreciate it!!

Sincerely,

California

First thing is first! We all need to pay a bit of gratitude to your older brother! Thank him for his service to his country. There isn't enuf of that going on these days, just polical rhetoric by politicians who hope to get into the Whitehouse. OH man, I thank him! Luckily I was in the US Navy during Peacetime, but if I had been called upon to defend democracy, then I would have done this with my head high and proud!!

Secondly, Cali-girl...MakeupTalk is YOUR board. If you wanna post this type of stuff here, we support that wholeheartedly since we welcome all things like this from people who we care for and about. I am sure we are all sad cuz of him possibly having to leave his family, but he will return to his family if called upon, I just know it. I spent many nights thinking of my family while sailing the seven seas defending domacracy abroad and the thoughts of my family was the only thing that got me thru it. He will be in our thoughts if called upon. My hat's off to him and wishing him the best of luck.

God bless you and your brother and God Speed

Cali. you and your family are in my prayers.

Does he not want to go? I live in a large military area so I see this a lot esp. with some of the girls I work with. I know, only through them, how difficult it is to send off a loved one at this time. I hope your prayers are answered and hopefully he wont be called up to go. Take care.

Sending east coast prayers your way........Have lots of faith.......it works in mysterious ways!!

Thank you guys. Yes he does not want to go. Yet he is psychologically prepared to go. A buddy of his volunteered him and he had no say in the matter. Before he had children, he would have gone as he did in the Gulf War. He is gung-ho about it only because fighting it is way too costly. But in his heart, he is very very saddened and upset. When he stopped by for dinner last night he laughed a lot.. it was a nervous laugh with pain underneath. You know the one? It scared me and I am so very saddened by this. I have gone to church and today I am writing letters to congress. Although this is the same brother who used to sit on me and who unearthed the dead goldfish I'd burried in the back yard, I love him soooo much! I can't thank you enough for your prayers. Every bit helps.

This is a letter from my sister-in-law that will explain it for you. This is only an excerpt. My husband, Sgt. 1st Class Mark A. Bethard, received notification on the evening of April 17th that he was being deployed to Afghanistan on May 15, 2004. When he was activated for Homeland Security, my husband explained to me that his papers indicated he would not be sent out of the country. In his present position at Camp Roberts, my husband heads base security on a rotating schedule at night. Colonel Hatch, while we have adjusted to his schedule and understand the necessity and importance of maintaining the safely of our homeland and our military bases, I most sincerely ask that you relieve my husband, Sgt. 1st Class, Mark A. Bethard, of his overseas assignment so that he can continue in his present position at Camp Roberts. Mark did not volunteer for the assignment. Another soldier put his name on a list of soldiers who would go from the 1st Battalion of the 223rd Infantry Regiment to train troops in Afghanistan. The soldier, who shares the same rank and military history as my husband, did not ask Mark’s permission to make this devastating change. My husband and I are new parents ...

Why in Bob's name would his supposed "friend" sign him up for something like this??What a piece

I know "life isn't fair" but it does *not* seem right that someone volunteered him: 1) without his permission 2) that the voluntary vote was even considered without asking him It seems very unjust to me. Nice "friend" to volunteer him. Our prayers are with you, and we will spread the word. If there is anything we can do (write letters, etc.) please don't hesitate to let us know.

hi my name is amanda and i want you to know that you have my prayers. I know that is a hard thing to good through. i wish the best for your family

I hope everything turns out ok and he doesn't have to go. He has already done more than enough for his country. I have the most ultimate respect for people who serve or have served in the military. Sending prayers to him and his family.....

Thank you. I do too (have a lot of respect, that is) and I love military men and women for keeping us safe!! Ty, Reija

Unfortunately, it does not work that way.

Sounds like an weird situation. There is always an higher ranked officer that takes care of things like this.

This is another unfortunate situation, as the high powers do not care about if you have a family or children. My story to reflect on this is that I was in the US NAVY in the Philippines and my wife was giving birth back here in the US with some complications. I never even got a phone call, only a teletype letter saying that my son was born. I didn't get to fly home or anything. I returned to my son being 6 months old. That was during PEACETIME. The moral of the story is that your brother has been called upon in an all volunteer force. He is already a HERO in my book! Thoughts and prayers go out

Tony you are 100% right. I found out today when I went to my state representative's office. The only time they'll let anyone off is in life or death situations. For example, when an American soldier stationed in Iraq requested to go home because his wife was dying of cancer.. it took months to approve. It is not likely and I have accepted that today. I wish I'd have talked to you first, but I had it explained to me by the district representative. He's going and that's that. His job is to train Afghanistan soldiers in warfare. He will be with them in combat. It's not looking good, but it is also not as bleak as being sent to Iraq would be. I am pretty upset about this. We all are. But I am not going to cry around about it because that won't be useful. I researched the chain of command and a few other things in order to be helpful to him. I HAD to find somethign that I COULD do. I hate feeling hopeless. Thanks Tony. P.S. There is an act called the "Soldiers and Sailors Act" which prohibits his house being sold if his wife cannot afford the payments.

That bit about the man whose wife was dying of cancer just seems so very wrong, as does the fact of Tony not knowing of his wife's birth complications until after. So wrong. So morally wrong. Not that the military knows anything about morals. (sorry, this all just really bugs me)
At least they have an inkling of mercy, when it comes to the houses not being sold if the wife can't afford payments. How generous. (note the sarcasm) It's not like there's any choice in the matter of a house, because partial income is gone if one member of the family is serving at the time. *snarls*

He's definitely a hero, because he's giving of himself in a most unselfish way, unlike how they selfishly are taking him.

*bangs head against desk*

I prayed. He will be going. Now I pray for safety and a fast return. THey want to keep him for 1.5 years.

My heart hurts for his 4 year old girl. He is her world. I am glad that she has all of us who love her so much. But "Daddy" is her love and play mate of choice. He adores her.

Thanks you all.

I am so sorry Cali. You and your whole family will remain in our prayers. 1.5 years - makes me want to scream!
