Root lifter that will not build up on scalp

Can anyone recommend a good, non-oily root lifter that will not cause scalp buildup and flaking? I've used Amplify, Pantene, some generic brand from Sally's and after about 4 days of use, I have a serious scalp buildup. I don't know if it's the product flaking off or if it actually my skin.
