Often many of us wish to either lighten our skin or lighten those marks on our skin from too much sun, pregnancy (melasma), etc.

What causes our skin to darken or get these spots?

It is the accumulation of melanin in the skin that causes dark skin color and age spots. As the skin naturally renews itself every 28 days, old pigmented cells are sloughed off and cells with less melanin arre brought to the surface, giving the skin a lighter, more even toned complexion.

On a molecular level, melanin is produced in the body from the conversion of the amino acid Tyrosine (takes many steps). This conversion requires the enzyme known as tyrosinase. Both Kojic acid and asefitida extract interfere with the action of tyrosinase, they are known as tyrosinase inhibitors. The combination of kojic acid , asefitida extract and Vitamin C block this conversion into melanin. The result ..a lighter skin color and more even tone!

Kojic Acid - derived from Japanese Mushrooms, prevents the formation of melanin. Find something with approx. 4% kojic acid to be effective!

Asefitida extract is derived from an herb from India and is similar to Kojic.

You will see many items with Kojic acid/and or Asefitida used for Skin Lightening.

Vitamin C works in combination with the above two in preventing the formation of Melanin.

Glycolic Acid - derived from sugar cane (aka AHA) helps in exfoliating the outer surface.

Please note: Make sure to wear a good sunscreen as the sun's rays stimulate melanin production and skin darkening. To minimize age spots the skin must be protected from the sun at all times!

Here's to the skin you're in!
