Sleep longer to lose baby weight

Researchers have presented a conundrum to new mothers, saying that women who want to lose the extra weight gained in pregnancy should try to get more sleep.

They found that mothers who slept five hours or less a day when their babies were six months old were three times more likely than more rested mothers to have kept on the extra weight at one year.

"We've known for some time that sleep deprivation is associated with weight gain and obesity in the general population, but this study shows that getting enough sleep - even just two hours more - may be as important as a healthy diet and exercise for new mothers to return to their pre-pregnancy weight," said Erica Gunderson of Kaiser Permanente, which runs hospitals and clinics in California.

Gunderson and colleagues studied 940 women taking part in a study of prenatal and postnatal health at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

The women who slept five hours or less a night when their babies were six months old were more likely to have kept on 5 kilograms of weight one year after giving birth, they found.

Women who slept seven hours a night or more lost more weight, they reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The researchers acknowledged this may pose a dilemma to new mothers, given that infants sleep so fitfully.

"With the results of this study, new mothers must be wondering, 'How can I get more sleep for both me and my baby?' Our team is working on new studies to answer this important question," said Dr. Matthew Gillman of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

Could be. Do you sleep uninterrupted? It wouldn't help me if I was able to have a baby these days. I'm lucky if I sleep 2 hours without waking for no apparent reason then it takes me forever to go to sleep again.

No, i dont sleep uninterrupted, im a very light sleeper, and my husband is always kicking me out of the bed, he doesnt even notice, he is a very deep sleeper and he takes up all the bed to himself lol, that wakes me up a lot because i have to tell him that im almost falling off the bed cause he pushes me out of it while sleeping, so i dont sleep well at all, and, on top of that by the time i am able to fall back asleep its already too late, cause i have to get up at 5 am to make his lunch for work, so its hard, i wish i could sleep better, i havent had a good sleep since i had my first kid, ten, almost eleven years ago.

Our bed sucks too, so that is another factor lol, too many things, maybe we should just sleep in separate beds haha.

On a side note, i wonder why not a lot of people have replied to this thread, we are lacking of parents on mut? LOL, or moms for that matter.

I think my bed is the problem too............which answers your question on my profile as to why I need so many alarms. For the few hours that I sleep at a time, I sleep like the dead. By the time it's time to get up I may have been up and down 4 times and I'm tired in the morning. Tonight....can't sleep at all and I usually get up at 6...........and maybe more moms will read this tomorrow.

I haven't slept an entire night in years. I think my problem has something to do with menopause. I am also gaining weight.

i have had major insomnia since having my baby.....i have to leave the tv on to fall asleep or sleep with a heating pad on my belly...it is so wierd but they both work, if i try to fall asleep on my own it takes me hours. i would love some better solutions. i was breastfeeding til my son was 17 months - so it has only been 3 months since i stopped, but it still hasn't gotten any better.....
