one thing for sure : the tofu i buy has the label ecocert, so i don't have to worry about GMOs (which are forbidden here apart from some experimental cultures).

Soy in moderation is not unhealthy. But, some people eat so much soy it IS unhealthy. Soy actually prevents the body's ability to absorb/utilize protein properly. So, if you like eating Tofu Pad Thai and having Tofu Pizza (the best!) that's great. Just do it in moderation. Some people eat Tofu for everything, drink Soy milk, and everything else soy...and that's unhealthy.

Everything in moderation.

i think you're right Venus. i know i'm really into soy, maybe too much, i mean i drink soy milk, i eat soy yogurts and sometimes cook tofu. on another website i asked why soy is bad, and the nice lady who answered overall was just saying soy is crap without much arguments to back up her words.

Unfortunately I cannot access the link that the OP provided, but there is certainly mountains of evidence proving that soy is unhealthy for most creatures. I'm not opposed to small amounts of fermented soy in the diet, but the propaganda from the soy industry touting soy as a superfood, heart-healthy and whatever they're saying this week is just bunk. It's is a multi-billion dollar industry that feeds the public lies. I would especially hope that expectant mothers do their research on soy.. there have been several lawsuits against soy formula manufacturers and you'll find lots of evidence supporting the notion that soy is extremely detrimental to human health, particularly that of small children.

These links might be found helpful. Actual long term studies on the benefits to women that soy offers.

Blackwell Synergy - Asia Pac J Clin Nutr, Volume 10 Issue 3 Page 204-211, September 2001 (Article Abstract)

soysum.htm

and these are a ton of links to articles y'all might find more revealing.

I agree with the poster above who aid anything can be bad, even water, when too much is consumed.

statistics of the benefits of soy for women - Google Scholar

All I know is that I CANNOT drink soy milk. And if I eat tofu, it has to be fresh, which means no reheated leftovers. If I eat either of those I become a little fart machine.

The problem is like a brazilian ad we have: someone says : Soy is good for you! And everyone starts eating a lot of soy. And after: now broccoli! And people eat a lot of broccoli! After: FISH! But with chocolate!

There's no such thing of a 'magical' food, that will be the solution of our problems. Most people forget the fact that everything in excess or the lack of something can bring trouble. It's the moderation . and eating everything on the spectrum, soy, milk, broccoli, fish, chocolate, red meat, white meat, oil , fat, carbs.

Moderation is the key of everything in life

yup !! moderation and imagination in the daily meals, that's all we need !!

i've found an article on vegfamily.com. it's a bit long but easy to read, and i think it tries to remain neutral in the explanations, balancing the good and the bad sides.

I think the issue with babies is not that soy is detrimental to health, but that the lack of breast milk and nutrients from other forms of milk (usually cows) are. Not breastfeeding at all, or not doing it long enough means the baby does not develop as many antibodies as it should, causing more illness later. Also, the calcium from milk is thought to help children's bones develop and grow more so than calcium fortified drinks/foods, and vitamins do (and since it is in it's naturally occurring state in that case, it probably is), and also helps them develop if they are underweight/undersized for their age.On a personal note, I myself had to be on soy formula after it was found that I was allergic to every other kind of formula out there. I didn't have issues with anything as compared to my brother and sister, who were both taken off of breast milk at the same time as me, but both had normal formula and milk. I was able to drink cows milk from about the age of 4 or 5 without much issue, but then it was found to be a trigger of some of my most severe migraines that started when I was a teenager. Since then I can not have dairy without severe issues either from it triggering migraines or when my body decides it can no longer break down the lactose after not having it for so long. I admit, soy tasted like crap at first, so I'm was likely as anyone to want to find some reason to run from it, but I got used to it, and other than the cost it's okay.

I never understood why people suddenly started eating soy everything, because that is a huge change when your body is not used to it, and it tastes pretty earthy (read, like dirt) when you are used to eating/drinking stuff from animals. As for the soy=cancer causing thing, wasn't it at one point said that cows milk/meat contains a carcinogens due to the hormones the cows are given for things like growth and to continue producing milk.

other things shown to cause higher breast cancer risk (related as they are also due to estrogen issues)-

Antiperspirants (one study showed that shaving underarms and using them after was the real risk)

Parabens - common ingredient in cosmetics and antiperspirant (parabens are shown to act like estrogens in mammals.)

Birth control pills (yet again the issue from high amounts of hormones.)

Hoping this makes sense as I am kinda tired
