An unhealthy thyroid gland can cause difficulties various from exhaustion to depression to hair loss. Due to its extensive set of symptoms, it is often misdiagnosed. The experts at Harvard Medical School explain: “An out-of kilter thyroid gland causes a variety of puzzling symptoms and many people and doctors mistake them for indications of another disease or normal aging. Over 12 million Americans have thyroid disease, many of whom don’t realize it.â€

Low amounts

Hypothyroidism is the type of thyroid disease associated with weight gain, chills, and brain fog. It is the most common type, taking place in some 80% of all cases. It is brought on by the thyroid gland’s underproduction of the important metabolic hormones. If left untreated, it can lead to high amounts of cholesterol which increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Losing weight and thyroid disease

Hyperthyroidism is the opposite-the thyroid produces far too much of its hormone. Those with this disease experience anxiety, irritability, and rapid weight loss which can lead to heart difficulties and bone fragility.

Prognosis and treatment

According to the American Thyroid Association, “Everyone should be screened for thyroid dysfunction every five years, beginning at age 35.†All it takes is a simple blood test for diagnosis. If you are diagnosed, though, you don’t have to worry. WebMD.com claims that, “Your doctor will most likely prescribe thyroid hormones in the form of a pill. This typically leads to noticeable improvements within a couple of weeks. Long-term treatment can result in more energy, lower cholesterol levels, and gradual weight loss,†which means you can go on living a long and normal life.
