The usual excitement with the start of the school year at York University has darkened after reports of early-morning sexual assaults.
Police say that two suspects entered Vanier College Residence, near Keele St. and Steeles Ave., where they sexually assaulted two women.
The suspects also attempted to assault another student and broke into two more rooms, but were scared off and fled in an unknown direction. Both incidents happened just right after the first official pub night of the year, which is mostly attended by York students.
According to police, the two victims were taken to the hospital, where they were later released.
“The campus is usually pretty quiet on Fridays – that’s when residents leave to go home – but you can tell especially in Vanier that there’s something going on,†says Gilary Massa, VP for equity of the York Federation of Students, which represents 45,000 undergraduate students. ‘This incident speaks of a broader societal issue of safe space for women.â€
She adds, “As a woman I felt really alone, and helpless. If you’re a first-year woman in residence, I can only imagine how they’re feeling about this.â€
Since the incident, York University has issued a campus-wide alert that includes extra precautions around the campus. Toronto Police has heightened its presence on campus including additional patrol presence within its residential buildings.
It is not known whether the suspects are York University students.
Both suspects are white, in their early 20s and wearing blue jeans. One is described as 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 with short dark hair. The other is about 6-foot to 6-foot-1 slim build with short light-coloured hair.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Toronto Police Sex Crimes Unit 416-808-7474 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
