US action star Vin Diesel has set his sights on being an assassin, signing on to star in a movie version of the ultra violent video game "Hitman," the industry press said.
The actor who made his name in films such as "Fast and Furious," will incarnate the chilling protagonist of Eidos Interactive's videogame franchise in an upcoming Twentieth Century Fox movie, Daily Variety said.
The hit video game, featuring an international assassin known as Agent 47 who works for a mysterious organisation dubbed the Agency, has sold more than 10 million copies in its first three incarnations.
The studio is working with producers Chuck Gordon and Adrian Askarieh to produce the movie for which Diesel will be executive producer. It was not immediately clear when production would start.
The plan to bring "Hitman" to the big screen underscores the huge potential of video games making the leap from the games console to movie theatres.
Fox was last week reported to be closing on a deal to make a film version of software giant Microsoft's blockbuster hit game "Halo".
