I loved this idea so much I went ahead and started the thread!  Let us know about all the tiny indies so we can throw some money at them!

http://www.makeuptalk.com/f/topic/135583-have-you-tried-this-indie-land-of-the-super-obscure/

I just have two words to say to this:  Uh.  Oh.

(Today's plan:  Get another narrow Billy bookcase from IKEA and get it set up!  And also get some file folders.  Then I will use the file folders to create tray liners for Birchboxes so I can reorganize my collection because the bead cases I've been using don't really suit my purpose any more.)

(Ahhhh!  I was just listening to Del tha Funkee Homosapien's "Dark Skin Girls," and I had *completely forgotten* that Ice Cube -- Del's cousin -- informs him that he's "Outtie 5000" at the end of the song.  @@marigoldsue had Vee send me some Outtie 5000 in my most recent order that I received yesterday because it's supposed to look *amazing* over the extra from the January OTM.  I was going to make this post and then go put that combination on before heading out to run the above errands.  Synchronicity!)

(Yes, I'm an oldschool rap fan.  This is specifically a Del weekend.  Love him.  Or at least a Del day once I get back from errands.  And time to go get colorful and dressed since IKEA opens in about twenty minutes!)

Project!

8f1f7af7-6300-4b4b-98d3-792c60aea039_zps

I didn't get file folders, but then I remembered I have card stock.  I'm still trying to get the spacing down.  It's tricky since different companies have different sizes of jars, and even for minis, some companies have different sizes for those!  I think I have four different sizes of jars from Darling Girl alone between full-sized, two different sizes for petits, and GWPs.  Anyway.  I got that second narrow Billy bookcase set up yesterday (while watching an *epically* bad horror flick.  My kind of Sunday!), so now it's time to work on the Birchbox-as-storage-tray portion of the proceedings.

Does anyone want/need a Fortune Cookie Soap $10 off code? I got it with the last soap box and am not going to use it.  I did just confirm that it still works on the site.

First person to PM me gets it.

Claimed, thank girls!!!

Is there a particular trick to using matte loose shadow? I have Pasty A. from MPZ and it's beautiful in the jar, but I have a hard time getting the right amount of product on my lids. It looks patchy if I try to use it over anything but UDPP.

One trick is to use very little primer. Make sure it's completely even. I haven't tried many mattes over different primers, but using a minimal amount could help.

This thread is so inactive now that all the other indie threads have been made! I miss you guys!

In other news, Brija Cosmetics is making a Harry Potter collection that is supposed to come out next week and I am soooo excited. I helped her come up with names and descriptions for the collection, so I HAVE to have it!

I miss having one larger active thread.  It feels like we have lost the sense of community with so many other threads.  I don't even bother to read most of them regularly and I rarely post now.

I totally see where y'all are coming from, and I feel the same way definitely (it really started slowing down once I joined in!).

From an organizational stand point, I do like the other threads. My best advice to help bring this sense of community back to this thread is put any non-specific (i know that's broad, but we're not going to be sticklers about it hahah) chit chat about indies in here. Like make looks of the day, questions about things, I'm trying to think of other things but I just woke up and I'm blanking hahaha.

So I've been using Cocoa Pink's silicone free conditioner to cowash and if course it had been discontinued. I really liked having a scent selection for my hair! Do any other indies do conditioner?

Fortune Cookie Soap has some conditioner bars. They smell yummy.

Mad City Sue also makes conditioners: https://www.etsy.com/shop/madcitysue?section_id=7477780&ref=shopsection_leftnav_4

I think she is a very underrated indie fragrance person in general, though I have had a few 'misses' with her over the years, mainly on her seasonal scents.  Her dupes are great, as are the scents she offers year round.

@@Meggpi  Black Violet has a conditioner that comes in a few different scents.  I've been using this on my hair (thick and wavy) and I've been happy with it.  Off the top of my head I'm not sure if it is silicone free though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Black Violet's formula looks silicone free so I'm gonna give it a go...I guess it will give me an excuse to try some perfume samples :D

I've been talking myself out of ordering BV since it seems like an inevitable rabbit hole of its own! But I'm sure you'll love them; everyone I know who uses BV does!

I wish I was enabled sooner because that no longer available valentine's scent sounds SO far up my alley.  I put samples of just about every scent in my cart and went through and deleted ones that have notes that I know my fiance doesn't like (anything unisex, vetiver, etc).  I've probably got like 60 scent minis and while I love some of the more interesting ones anything he doesn't like doesn't really get worn.

I feel the same way and this is why I wasn't very excited when we went from one thread to many :( I understand it can be helpful to find older posts this way, but I miss you girls!!! So much. We should bring this back, just talkin' bout things and stuff.

As an absolutely in no way business-minded person I can see not wanting to expand a small business.  If you just want to share your creativity and make some monies from it staying small makes sense.  I thought about selling knitting on Etsy but realized to compete with current shops I'd have to crank out a lot of boring stuff with a quick ETA and less desirable materials (although it's different in that I couldn't really hire anyone to like, knit for me).  I get that dichotomy.  I would want to knit estonian and shetland lace, which would mean I could only really make one or two pieces a month.

I wouldn't actively 'boycott' but it is hard not to feel really disappointed when you are excited about a release and can't get anything you wanted on the SAME DAY as the release.  I'm one of the lucky people who can browse a little bit at work during downtime, but I can't be like 'Stroke alert? Trauma level 2? Not right now, I'm TRYING TO GET BATH STUFF'  I just don't want to keep getting excited about releases and then miss them, so I don't want to pay as much attention.

Okay - to bring the chattiness back to this thread

since february is approaching its that time again that subs start opening up. I'm on the lottery list for GDE but I'm also intrigued by i+ta. Honestly, I'm interested in all of the subs, but trying to decide what I should invest my time in to *trying* to get is what is killing me!

Did you see the preview for the i+ta sub?  It's a gorgeous peachy-coral.  *Love*.  Linda tends to overload colors like this with sparkle, so I can't wait to see it in real life!

i totally didn't even realize HW subs opened up already, and there were only two spots open 0_0 so glad i didn't bother trying

this is why i'm not going to get my hopes up about getting into any subs bahhaha, but honestly the makeup is so affordable that placing orders isn't a big deal

I think Christine had a helper for the past couple of months but is now flying completely solo, so she's cut the number of slots back.  I cannot believe my luck in getting into the indie subs.  I'm up to...  Five?  GDE, HW, NM, i+ta, and Ephemera.  I think that's it.  There may be one more in there I can't remember, not counting the upcoming Espionage Cosmetics boxes that I have prepaid through December.  I'm super excited for April!  I am seriously looking forward to seeing what goes into them.  Their stated value is $50 or more, and their nail wraps are $10 a pop, and they're sending four wraps a month, so they must be sending at least one other thing each month.

Yeah seriously, the people who have managed to get into these subs before the number capped out are super lucky. The satisfaction rate is so high with these subs that there aren't usually a lot of slots open!

i+ta has 14 spots open, and I think is going up at 2:30 am EST, so i'll let y'all know how awful that ends up being trying to get in hahaha.

    • No Buy Program Guide   I found a great new No Buy channel on YouTube (well it found me; it was in my recommended videos), a new No Buy channel from a New York concert pianist, Natalia Lavrova. I find this fascinating, because I love the world of classical music. Here is someone in my dream life, who loves shopping, and beauty subscriptions, who has credit card debt, and is doing a No Buy! I'll be fascinated to watch this channel and hear how this artist's No Buy goes as she is preparing for concert tours abroad! Ms. Lavrova has a really good Shop My Stash video with great tips on winter makeup colors, like icy pink highlighter. I looked for her piano performances on YouTube and they are stunning. This is going to be a big inspiration for me!
    • I made it through the night with no buying! I slept through the shopping craving like it was an illness. I woke up after the 12 hours of sleep and as I was waking up I thought of a happy time in the 90's. I was young; all my family members were alive. I was at a Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, (I love James Bond and don't know what I am going to do when his new film is released, since I'm not allowed money for entertainment on my No Buy). On the floor near my feet was a big bag of Estee Lauder products that I had just gotten with my birthday and Christmas money. I had a full size moisturizer and a huge PWP, beautiful. The film had a great ending. The Bond girl was underwater, running out of air, and just in time, there's James Bond, the theme music resumes! Great scene! And walking around the mall after, how happy I felt! And today I am sad that time is gone, many family members are gone, life is sadder, time is running out, and I did not use that bag of Estee Lauder products up! I probably used them a few times and then threw them out and bought something else. And maybe if I had used every drop, in my mind, I could have held on to life, to time, to happiness. At any rate I would have had more money. If only we knew about No Buys and Project Pans then! This is just one of a million examples of how I think about this.  When I woke up Elle S was still analyzing her samples! She was talking about how her project taught her to evaluate (excellent video, Oct 1, 2017).  Last night in bed I took some photos of samples I need to use up. Sorry for so many long posts, but I've really had to work on this for the last 24 hours. Primers, shower gels and body scrub, toners, and masques.
    • I haven't given in and bought anything yet, though I wanted to. I went to bed early (I think it was 5 pm), and I was listening to Elle S 365 Days of Samples playlist on YouTube. It is inspiring. Elle is detailed, persevering, and creative. I was very cozy, and I dreamed I was going to a spa in Europe. I was so excited about the spa, and about the skin care products the spa was going to have in the room for us. My mother was going with me, and I told her I was going to bring a minimal amount of beauty products in my suitcase, because we would be getting some from the spa. When I woke up I was sad, because the dream was so nice. Now I just woke up and I'm hot and thirsty, but the craving to shop has gone down somewhat. Before I went to sleep I looked in my sample boxes. I saw a beautiful mini lotion with a gold bow on the package that I got for Christmas and had already forgotten about. The glittery gold bow sparkled beautifully in the light.  This while experience today of realizing I have been on No Buy so long without realizing it has been interesting. I have been keeping busy with other things. I began going to a a new religious congregation a month after I went back on No Buy (a different religion I wanted to learn about for a long, long time) and have been busy with that, and have been making new friends and socializing more. The new religion is one that fills my need for intellectual and artistic (through its liturgy) stimulation. I've met wonderful people. It's not always easy to keep going there, as I'm shy and reclusive, but I've kept it up. Maybe this is what made the time go so fast without me knowing it.  I guess I'll go and listen to some more 365 Days of Samples.
    • I'm changing the way I keep track of the time on my No Buy in order to motivate myself more. I didn't realize until today that I'm in month 8 of my second year! Four and a half months until completion of Year 2! I want to finish my mini sample products by June 12, 2020. Here is a partial inventory: Shampoo minis - all used up! Face cream, and face cleanser minis - all used up after a great deal of work and patience!  Mini body scrubs - 1  Mini shower gels - 7 Mini face primers - 8 Mini toners - 9 Mini face masques - 12 I still have to add up mini body creams, hair conditioners, and perfumes. I should reorganize them all to get a new perspective.
    • Today is the test - will I pass or fail?  Two years ago at this time (end of January 2018, on a Sunday), I discovered Hannah Louise Poston videos for the first time. She had just begun her channel. I recalled cleaning my room while watching the videos and feeling very inspired about my No Buy. I was inspired for an entire year, until ... One year ago at this time (end of January 2019, on a Sunday), I was feeling down. The weather was very bad. There was no good food in the house. I started watching haul type videos. I decided to buy something I didn't need. I felt HORRIBLE and just went on a binge. I tried to hard to get back on the path, but couldn't. I didn't get back on the path until June, when I came back with renewed vigor and had huge success for the rest of the year.  I have been thinking, why don't I just let go again, today? After all, last year I let go and did not ruin myself that much, and then by summer, like a miracle, I was back on No Buy and finished all my goals for the year and more. So I'm using that as justification for cheating. I do have shopping cravings right now. Still, I have not used half of the nice things I got on my binge last year. What will I do? Will I relive 2018 or 2019?  ______ Several hours later. I still want to shop. I cleaned a bit while watching the very first video of Hannah Louise Poston, which was published on January 15, 2018 (Introducing My No-Buy Year!). Watching that brought back a lot of good memories. At the 10:00 mark of this video, Hannah was taking about still being in the exciting early phase of the No Buy, with packages still coming in the mail from the last fling before, and it all being new and not the long haul yet. Then I realized I'm not in the early phase, I'm in the long haul now. I looked at my diaries and realized that I am already halfway through the eighth month of my second No Buy year! It has actually been that long since I began again on June 12! I only have four and a half months to complete in my second No Buy year! I really had no idea I was so far along. So while the calendar year is young, it's August as far as my No Buy Year 2 is concerned. The second year of No Buy goes quickly! I still want to shop, but now I am looking at things differently, and may feel less tempted.
