Does anyone have hearing loss or wear a hearing aid? I just found out I have damage to my right middle ear, the little hairs/nerves and it is not from a noisy job or loud music, from my ex bf's abuse. My left ear is normal. Anyways I can hear loud noises, but lower frequency I have trouble. I have put up with it for at least 7-8 months. Hearing aids are pricey from what I gather and I am still deciding if I should get one.

My sis has hearing loss on her right ear because of meningitis that she had when she was just 1 year old, but she is used to it and don't use any hearing aid - of course, you have to tell secrets to her on her left ear, otherwise she'll ask you to repeat ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I say that if it's bugging you, go to a doctor and see what can be done, and see if it can be treated

Sorry to hear about your sister Lia. I did see a doctor; ear, nose, throat specialist/doctor, that is where I had the test done. He said the damage is permanent, nothing can be done. I may go without a hearing aid, since my left ear is normal and have gone this long so far.

Don't worry about her, she's 21 already, and her left ear is normal too . She only noticed that she didn't hear correctly on her right ear when she was a teenager, because she always thought it was normal.

Probably you'd need the hearing aid only when you get older... Right now i'd say you wouldn't really have to worry about it.

The only problem about don't having a good hearing on the 2 ears is that you lose part of the perception of "sound placement". Like when you hear a phone ringing, if you have 2 fully functional ears, you can easily find the phone. When you have only one, it gets more confused. It's like covering one eye and try to see with only one eye - you lose the depth notion

Wow! I'm sorry to hear that Lia! Great advice though! Best of luck Shelley!

Justine had a hearing aid.....I think it was like $1500 - $2000........she never wore it much b/c she was in 8th grade when we got it.........now she just can hear well out of the one ear ........ kinda doesn't help much for her schooling, I think she misses alot more then she claims.

She has had prolly 4-5 sets of tubes in her ears through out her life........she never had infections, just fluid build up so it impared here hearing.........needless to say it prolly caused perm damage.

anywhoooooo.........they are very small, but things sound kinda odd, hollowish with a hearing aid.........I've tried Justine's

Yep...I wear hearing aids. I was born with a hearing loss...so I've been wearing hearing aids for 29-30 years. I wear aids on both sides.

Right now, I have fully programmable digital hearing aids. Retail cost is about $2500 per hearing aid. However, at least in the states, there are programs out there that can assist in getting hearing aids for lower costs. You may also want to check in with local abuse shelters to see if they can point you to local doctors/hearing aid dispensers who would be willing to help you out with the costs of the aids...since they were a direct result of abuse.

I wear Qualitone hearing aids...and I have to say that Qualitone has excellent customer service. They are located out of Minnesota and really do work to make sure that people are happy with their hearing aids.

Depending on what kind of loss you have and all that...would be the deciding factor on how much you would be spending on a hearing aid. Maybe getting your hearing tested and speaking with someone regarding the best kind of aid for you, you could then write to Qualitone and ask them if they could help you out.

Do you know what kind of loss you have and what kind of hearing aid is being recommended to you?

They come in a huge variety of sizes and styles. Most hearing aids will sound "hollow" at first as your ears get used to them (of course, if you have normal hearing, the sound that is amplified will sound different). However, if she's had them for a while and they still sound hollow, then they are either not the proper power for her or they need a little bit more "fine tuning". I know with my hearing aids, it took several attempts at "tuning" them to be just right. The sounds do not sound hollow...they sound rich and vibrant. Also, people with hearing losses should have their hearing tested every 1-2 years or so. Just to make sure that the hearing does not change and that the hearing aid is still amplifying what it should be.

Why doesn't she wear her hearing aid??

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the advice. The ear, nose, throat specialist said the damage is to my middle ear, small hairs/nerves are damaged, significant damage. He did a hearing test. He said if I am going through with charges or there are charges there is some type of compensation program? that can help cover the cost of a hearing aid. He said if I go through with it, he would provide the medical evidence. I haven't gone anywhere yet for a hearing aid or looked around. I will check out the ones you recommended, phone around, thanks. I have gone this long without one, but if it does bother me more I will look into it. I can hear loud noises, but lower frequency hard for me to hear.

btw.........Justine's hearing aid is a Starkey Destiny 1200 CIC , digital and very tiny!!

some great info for you on the link!!!!
