I spoke with Karen Guzzi and Leah Schwochert, co-founders of Clever Girl Innovations, who have created a few brand new products: Glam Ears and Glam Mat.
Both are made from the same heat resistant silicone, which is non-toxic and washable. The Glam Ears are made to fit over your ears to protect your ears from getting burned by that curling iron, and the Glam Mat is placed on your counter so protect your counter from getting burned...by that same dang curling iron!
The bottom, she suggested, is made to have different compartments, so if you want, you can turn it over and fill each one like "buckets" like you would do an artist's palette, too.
