I think one of the problems with our society is the fact that most of us can look at that picture, shrug it off and say "Oh it's not that bad" because she is a celebrity and the fact that a famous photographer took the picture.

Let's look at this picture in a different context.

Imagine a school teacher was found to be in possession of a picture (one similar to the VF Miley pic) he/she took of one of his/her 15 year old students. The teacher would lose his/her job, it would be all over the news and there would be outrage. Child pornographer!

I think the picture is a beautiful picture, but not appropriate for a 15 year old girl. But just one person is not to blame. Miley, her parents, the photographer, all her handlers, and Vanity Fair are all to blame. It is irresponsible for them to present a 15 year old girl with a huge fan base of girls younger than her in this light.

I am sure most of you have seen myspace and the photos some young girls post of themselves. Is this what we want our daughters, granddaughters to think is appropriate? I sure don't.

We should not be pushing young girls into growing up so fast. There is plenty of time for that.

She is a little young to have photos like that taken, though they were tasteful. I personally didn't think they were too bad.

I never saw the big deal about it either. As for the Myspace and Teacher comments - maybe but then maybe not. The idea of parental consent should be involved and if it were with the teacher taking pictures of a student like that for artful purposes then it will happen. And believe you me - there are many parents out there who do allow these things.

Maybe the world is just evolving too fast for some of us now. Remember when back in the good ol days when wearing a skirt above the knee or wearing a bikini to the beach was innappropriate? Heck - when some oldschool folks think like that still - we mock em! And then, ironically enough, the good ol days before that when 14 was an approriate age to get married.

I can see how the pictures are suggestive and innapropriate for a 15 year old but I think some of the people reporting this story in the news are over-reacting on a huge scale!

When I first heard about what had happened the reporter made it sound like she was standing in front of a camera topless with her boobs hanging out and when I actually saw the pictures I was kinda like 'Well you can only see her back!' I still think she shouldn't have done it but the media are making it seem way worse than it is. They're saying she is now a 'bad role model' wtf?! She wasn't caught doing drugs or binge drinking and she didn't get pregnant by some guy she didn't even know. She got her picture taken with her back out! It was suggestive but not the end of the world.

The thing that made me lose repsect for her was the fact that she said she liked the photos and thought they were 'art' yet after a whisper from the Disney bosses in her ear she was reciting an apolgy about how she'd let people down. That annoyed me.

I really didn't think any of the pictures were bad. I do agree that the one where she's covered by just a blanket is a bit racy for a 15 year old. Her parents were there and they all thought it was artistic, so nobody was forced to do anything. Obviously, its not her fans that are bothered but the parents.

To be honest, I'm surprised that Annie Leibowitz isn't getting any direct hateful comments. She's the one that took the photographs. I just think that she's getting the heat bc she's Miley Cyrus, had it been any other teenage model the same age it just would've been tasteful and nobody wouldve really cared.

Its like others have already said, the media loves to build ppl up, tear them down, and build them back up. They're already praising her response to the pictures.

They are very tasteful, beautiful photos, IMO. I think Miley knew exactly what she was doing. She is a very smart young woman. And I certainly think she can still have faith and pose in a beautful photo where she shows.....*gasp* her back!

Is it a bad thing to teach our daughters to be proud of their bodies?

But this is after all a country where we freak out over a little accidental nipple! LOL

i think people are making this into a big deal and it's really really not. the photos don't expose her or shed her in a negative light. in fact, if those pictures weren't surrounded in so much scandal i wouldn't have even thought of them as promiscuous or whatever they're being called right now. people need to calm down and stop being so judgemental.

You know what though, I get the artistic feel of the photo and that teacher comment - I get the whole other aspect of why it would be a big deal but in all honesty, it really isn't.

I think this is made more of a big deal then when Britney came out at 17 on the Rolling Stone magazine.

I was 12 back then when this popped out so I don't remember if it was made controversy.

But compare that to Miley's photo. It really isn't all that risque, come on now... it's her damn back. She has candid photos that are waaaay worst than that Leibovitz's shot and it made the news but didn't take so much heat like this photo has of her exposed back.

ITA. That pic is a bit much for a 15-year-old, but I don't get the huge fuss, & I am what some consider a big prude. For instance, I don't agree with actors/models doing nudity. In any case, the pics have made her more popular. I didn't know who she was until recently.

I tend to agree w/ the "too risque" ... yes, it's just her back, and yes, it is a classy picture ... and she's adorable. But she's 15, and the simple fact is they were trying to make her look sexy. And I'm sorry Miley, you're adorable, but you're 15 and not yet sexy. IMO!

I saw this ad from 1976 and thought this might lend a little perspective. Here we have a young teen, but the hairstyle and makeup are clearly trying to show the teen older than she is. So i guess the idea here is that this is nothing new.
