2013-02-11 Vatican Radio   Pope Benedict XVI on Monday said he plans on resigning the papal office on February 28th. Below please find his announcement.  Full text of Pope's declaration

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

BENEDICTUS PP XVI

Thoughts?

I read that since 1415, a pope hasn't resigned. Next, will be the nominations for a new pope and the conclave. .

Did anyone catch Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God on HBO?? It was a really intense documentary about the pedophiles in the Catholic Church.  It discussed Pope Benedict a bit...

I'm not religious, but I did like the previous Pope...JP1? Correction, probably JP2. He seemed like the grounded genuine religious man out to help make the world a better place. When B16 got selected...I dunno....he looked like a movie villain...like what the movies would make an evil Cardinal look like. And I think that he wore Prada shoes just irked me the wrong way...not that I'd expect him to wear burlap sacks for shoes, but really? Prada? shouldn't the church be helping the less fortunate? And I don't care what the official reason is. No Pope resigns for health reasons. There's gotta be something else. The conspiracy theorist in me says so ....

Well since you brought this up.... I have to agree. John Paul II was one of those humans that truly was passionate and empathetic about his fellow man. Benedict on the other hand was a Nazi solider during WWII, which is why I never liked him, and to me never seemed genuine. As you mentioned he looks like an evil Cardinal and as Pope I'm not sure how well received he was among Catholics. You're absolutely right, no Pope resigns for health reasons - they just take it slower and their handlers help them as needed. Rumors are swirling he actually has Alzheimer which is why he's stepping down and that would be a legitimate reason to step down if his memory and health was failing because of it but like you I think there is something more to it. Since the Catholic Church has always been secretive and we'll probably never know the truth.

JPII was great. . He made some great efforts to bring the Church forward with science and humanitarian causes. While the current pope may sport Prada shoes on occasion, the Catholic Church in itself probably does more charitable work on an international basis than most organizations with charities, hospitals, and orphanages to name a few. If it is health related or otherwise, I don't care to conspire to know. Hopefully, he enjoys whatever time he has left and the next pope will do greater things for the world.

Couldn't agree more with the positive comments about John Paul II. Regardless of religious affiliation, I believe JP2 was a good man who did what he thought was right for ALL people. Benedict sort of left me cold with his history. I hope whoever succeeds him will be a good, honorable man.

I heard several news reports speculating the next pope may be from Africa or South America, where Catholicism is on the rise. I'm hoping for JPII 2.0 lol.. a great humanitarian. Little side story, I received some rosary beads blessed by JPII from a former co-worker who took a trip overseas. Obviously, this was quite a few years ago. I'm not Catholic myself, so they went to my Grandpa. He's a practicing Catholic and even went to seminary school. He ended up leaving, because he felt it wasn't his calling. Must be true, as he went on and married my bombshell grandma and had 8 kids..lol.

Ha ha! That's a great story; your grandpa must have loved that Rosary.  I am really praying and hoping that Cardinal Arinze will be elected Pope.  Here's a cool 5 minute video of his reaction to Pope Benedict's resignation:

He had great talking points and spoke with ease. Very personable and friendly. . Time to start reading up on cardinals!

Must echo the sentiments about John-Paul and Benedict. Ideally the next Pope will be more like the former - at least then we might avoid things like the whole condom fiasco...

Yes, that was strange.  I teach JP2's Theology of the Body, and I am blown away by his wisdom and love every class.  He was a genius.

I watched the video and Cardinal Arinze is well spoken and genuine.

I think he is 80 years old, which makes it unlikely he will be our next pope.  But honestly, who knows!
