Can you go to sleep with the music on?

I have a sound machine I inherited from my mother, it's older than the hills. But it just plays a soft humming sort of white noise. I prefer sleeping with it, and nothing else in the complete dark. However I very rarely get it my way. Jerry usually ends up turning the tv on, and if I turn it off he wakes up and turns it back on. I do have a bedtime playlist on my ipod that i'll dock and listen to some nights if I'm in the mood. It's just a list of songs that soothe me.
