Just having the money set aside wouldn't mean you had to spend it. But it might be a good idea for those of us who spend blindly without a clue how much we are actually blowing.

To my horror, I qualified for Sephora VIB and ULTA Platinum status this past year. That translates to a minimum of $700, just at those 2 stores!

Right, but knowing myself I WOULD spend it. Without a doubt. Which is why I will continue to say that make outs/no buys are very individual and every one needs to set their own terms, because there is no one size fits all.

From what I understand, it's a pretty firm "just 10 products."
No - only if that's what you decide.  None of the rules are "firm" for everyone, because Makeout's not really that kind of thing.  It's just an agreement you are making with yourself - a goal you're setting - so you custom-set your goal to meet whatever your own specific needs are.

awww.... hang in there. Do you have any leeway with if you use up the products that you have?

I just bought a Dr.DennisGross peel from Sephora online to get my birthday gift.... I'll count the peel, since I bought it, but the gift...well, I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

two down, but I've used up about 10 samples already, and I'm getting close on a couple of full sizes....and I sold a few of my unopened full sizes on eBay so net-net, more is leaving my place than is coming in, and that's  good thing :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
I only wrote in a no-count for a few staple items I knew I was going to need, such as black or brown eyeliners, or a painterly paint pot.  Didn't really write in free replacements, although I don't really have a lot of stuff so I could justify it if I wanted.  For instance, I have 7 blushes.  5 are Jordana, 1 Elf, and 1 from an Ulta set.  But that's up from two just eight months ago.  In that same time, I went from around 5 lip products to around 35.  That includes lipstick, lip glosses, stains, everything.  Everything I have fits in single layers in a 14"x14"x10" set of shelves like this:

So in honesty, for me, it's not a matter of "I've been hoarding for years."  It's just a "I really didn't care about makeup and didn't have much, and suddenly I'm buying in a way that feels out of control.  And I really don't want to be spending this much - I've gotta bring some sanity into this process!  I don't even enjoy what I have now, because I'm just buying to buy."

I don't expect to be using up a lot of stuff soon, since most of it was purchased so recently.  However, if I find I'm running out of allows because I'm using up stuff and love it enough that I want more of that same item, I may adjust my agreement to allow replacements.

(By the way - notice in the post above I avoided mentioning how much eye stuff I went from-to.  ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />  Was a lot.  Still all fits in one of the drawers, but it's a lot to buy in less than one year!!!)

It's from Target.  I had been using a plastic shoe box, and when I started getting more stuff and samples it was impossible to to find anything.  It's a really nice little set of drawers!

I feel exactly the same way. I'm not doing the makeout challenge right now but I am planning on doing project 10 pans every time I plan on buying one item. I don't know how my collection grew so much in 12 months...and I had almost nothing before that!!

Yeah - and notice how quickly I got defensive and started justifying!  Just a question about whether I was allowing myself replacements and I'm hunting down a picture to prove how small my storage is, to set myself up that it's okay if I extend how many I'm allowed!  *Sheesh!*  Before last year, if I bought five products in a year, I was goin' a bit wild.  Here I am now, worried if I limit myself to 5 more this year, I'll lose track of some new favorites I've found.  (And yeah - chances that I'll love and finish and want more of many products are slim.  I think I've hit pan on 3 things in my life - and they were concealers and eyeliners, which I've already allowed for!)  Serious proof that whether what I have looks like "a lot" or not, it's become a problem.

Sad panda.  =(

Ugh i totally understand!! the only things i've finished is a blush (hit pan and then threw out because i got so sick of the shimmer) and an eyeliner. It's good that we are trying to curb our habits right now though and not in another year or two...otherwise our stash really would be out of control!

If you guys meet here in Harrisburg, I will join. I live right here :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I know that I am going to need help. I don't think I can follow the makeout for the year but I am planning to make myself do a no buy every other month for the entire month. I bought so much in January. I am allowing myself to purchase through this weekend and then I will not purchase anything else until after 3/3. This may be one of the hardest things I have done in a long time.

*Chuckle*  Sorry - I was joking about meeting there.  It would be a few hours away.  But you'll do great!  I'm really enjoying using my stuff a lot more since I'm not all wrapped up in wanting.  Enjoy what you got in January!  3/3 is just a month away!

I'm pleased with my first month, even though I used up five of my ten items.  They're all items I would have bought at some point in the year, if not now.  Not as crazy about the Color Tattoos as I thought I'd be, but I'll probably learn to use them and wear them lots.  I know the other items are ones I'll get tons of use out of - except for the Missha that I'm waiting for, I already am using them most days.

On the record, I'm adjusting my Makeout to allow exact replacements of unique things I run out of.  And by exact, I mean same brand and color - not "I ran out of a lip gloss so I can buy a lip gloss."  I will allow buying full-size of a deluxe sample I finished.  I love my Bite lip gloss Vintage and Fresh Sugar Rose samples from the "Give Me Some Lip" set, so I'd be allowed to get a full-size when I run out without counting it - but I've got too many highlighters to replace the Mary Lou-Manizer or Highbeam samples.  And there's a lot of stuff I won't replace even if I use it all.  And I don't know why I didn't write replacements in in the first place, 'cause what - was I thinking I wouldn't need more BB cream??

I've noticed I've been kind of afraid to use my favorites this month - especially these lip samples - because I'm afraid to run out.  And I find myself thinking, "I'm going to replace this stuff, and it's definitely going to put me over five more, so since I wrote a game-I-can't-win contract I may as well just quit now..."

So I'm just going to change my contract and allow it.

And watch - December 31st, I'll be here saying, "Wouldn't you know, I didn't manage to use up those samples at all anyway!  And I almost used it as an excuse to sabotage myself and quit?  Really?!"

I'm still stuck on the clearing/purging aspect. I've thrown maybe 25 items out, ranging from foundations to eyeshadows to lipglosses (kind of wish I took a picture of it to show my progress), but I still have so much. I kind of feel like I'm at a standstill. I'm thinking I'll set a day aside each month to go through and get rid of more, because I may have reached my toss limit. I might start posting pictures of my collection in the appropriate forum. It might seem like makeup porn to some, but I think it'll help me to see my excess.

On the upside, I haven't bought anything. That's actually been surprisingly easy to do (so far). There are random items I'm making a list of that are on my radar to try (Essie apricot cuticle oil, Dr. Weil's Mega-Bright serum), but I don't want to indulge until I'm more satisfied with what I've gotten rid of.

It took me a while to really go through and decide what to keep/sell/toss....and by toss I also mean finding a different purpose. So unwanted perfumes become room/linen sprays and diffuser fodder, damned apricot scrub became a foot scrub...just to use it up because I knew it was never going to be used for its original purpose. The process just takes time...but it's also a wakeup call on what we actually use and don't use.

Hooray! yeah - shopping your stash is actually not that bad!

If you're not crazy about the color tattoos, can you return them? I figured there's only room in my house for stuff that I love! besides, if you return them, you get your money back with the ability to spend it on something else later that you REALLY want. I've really had to learn to take full advantage of store return policies. I use to feel bad about returning like $10 of drugstore make-up....but if it's the wrong shade or it just doesn't work, whatever... it's just not worth keeping....gotta only spend money on stuff that will knock your socks off!

I did my huge first huge purge last night. 3 garbage bags full of makeup, hair products, lotions, moisturizers, make up bags, beauty army/glossy/birch boxes. Why was I keeping all of this crap? I still have a giant hoard of make up, but my moisturizer is down to the one I use, my hair products are down to the only ones I use, and I can move in my bathroom. I think this was the first step to putting it into perspective. If I had that much to THROW AWAY, how much money did I waste? How much space did I waste? Why did I buy it? I am thankful to have a very supportive boyfriend, he is going to be really happy when he comes over and sees my bathroom is a little bit cleared out.

Oh, and I have a bunch of unopened color tattoos too, I wanted to take them back but the colors I actually like are the ones that came from target, the rest came from bloom.com on a spur of the moment purchase when they were 60 percent off. I think I"ll take them to ebay with the other giant pile of stuff that was unopened to try and get a little money back.

I'm currently undergoing a purge at the moment, and I've already come across so many items that are making me wonder what the hell I was thinking when I bought them. I gravitate towards natural, nude, toned down colors, so I'm trying to figure out why the heck I bought the NARS Exhibit A blush, the MAC lipstick in Morange, etc. I think I may have been trying to convince myself that I could be wild/bold/adventurous/whatever with my makeup but nope, that just ain't who I am, haha.

I think this is going to be really difficult to get rid of all of this stuff. I've definitely got some hoarder tendencies, but I want to work on simplifying my life. I'm sick of seeing so much junk in the closet. It does feel so wasteful, but pinksofoxy does make a really good point when she says that the money isn't wasted when you throw it away/give it away; the money was already wasted when you bought makeup and junk that you didn't need. So, I just keep trying to remind myself.

This will be tough, but we can all do it!

I know it's late into 2013, but I am going to try to do this as well. I don't have a huge collection but I have enough things to last me for at least a year. :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I'm going to allow myself 12 purchases.

* You can buy 12 things this year.

* Excludes nail polish remover, hair care, basic body care, top coat, base coat, skincare products, makeup remover

* Makeup that other folks buy you is not included. Ex: husband for birthday..

I am going to keep a list of products on my phone that I want... and see if I want it months later.

How's everything going so far for everyone? I realized my hair/skincare hoards weren't anywhere near as bad as I thought. I'm actually down to one conditioner, one deep conditioner, one hair oil, and a full size shampoo and 3 tiny sample shampoos already. Hair care is no longer part of my make out, but I'll only be buying my HG items, as I've figured those out as this point. I have two hairsprays so that is the one item I need to work on using up. For styling products , I have a few things but not so many I'm disgusted with myself.

Skincare, I have a backstock of exfoliating products, but I actually only have one moisturizer (including samples), one toner, one eye cream,2 small facewashes, etc. I do have too many serums. I won't be buying more products for a while, but I don't feel like its out of control anymore.

That leaves me with a hoard of make up and nail polish. That is what is out of control. Foundation is the one thing I'm allowed to buy as I only have a little bit of bb cream left to use up and that will be gone by March.

I'm feeling good. I've resisted sales, and I have a drawer full of unopened stuff I'm going to be listing on e-bay and a few unopened things that will be going back to sephora from end of the year purchases.

I'm doing pretty okay. I've used up 10 of my items on the UD Oz palettes, and I had to really think about those a lot and decided that I did really want them. I've been switching my makeup out weekly to "shop my stash" and use items that haven't been touched much before and get a feel for everything. If something isn't great/don't like it/looks awful on me, it's going away. No excuses. No point in keeping a bunch of crap around that I don't like. I'd much rather use the stuff I love.

I also organized all my samples after I cleared out the ones that I wasn't going to use. I don't have as many of some as I thought I did, and much more of others than I previously thought. Sorting them out has helped me see what I have, and exactly how much I have, which should make using them up a little easier.

ok I need to officially join makeout 2013.  I have a such a large abundance of stuff it is so out of control. I have been thinking about this for a while and need to officially write it down so I stick to it..

I will not buy any new moisturizer, scrub, shower gel, lip balm, body lotion, serum  deodorant, makeup etc unless I am completely out of it.  ( this is not likely to happen except for shampoo/conditioner/deodorant, toothpaste (I have a lot to use up :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />.

I need to learn that I don’t need a surplus of anything.

ALLOWANCES

I am allowed to keep my Sample Society/Birchbox subscriptions and can obtain things through trades.

I am allowed Five new, beauty (make-up, skincare, haircare, soap, tools/appliances, toothpaste, accessories, everything) items until January 2014. I am going to try and save them for black Friday.

I am hoping by Black Friday I will have learned my lesson :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE  STAY STRONG!!
